I traditionally start my challenge year around Christmas, so I still have a month and a half left to pretend I'll make a real dent in my 12 in 12 challenge, but I wanted to get started with brainstorming my categories.

To make things a little more realistic for myself, I'm planning to aim for nine books in each category, rather than 13 -- I can at least fondly hope that I'll make it to 117, but 169 is just comically over-ambitious.

So here is this year's lineup:

I. Children's Lit
II. Teen Lit
III. Comics
IV. Science Fiction
V. Fantasy
VI. Detective Novels
VII. Books About Women
VIII. Post-Modern
IX. Books on Film
X. General Non-Fiction
XI. Drama
XII. 1700-1900
XIII. Other

Starred books are re-reads.

Lots of great categories over here! And quite a few books that I have on Mt. TBR - looking forward to hearing what you think of them.

Lots of interesting stuff here.
You've reminded me that I need to add V for Vendetta - and a few others - to me TBR list (sigh).
I hope you enjoy the Lord of the Rings trilogy - I loved it when I read it for the first time, thought it's pretty slow in the beginning so be prepared (when they leave Tom Bombadill it starts to pick up speed).
The Awakening is really great, and so short you'll almost finish it during a lunch break.

I'm in the middle of Moby Dick right now and will also be reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and possibly The Merchant of Venice next year so it'll be interesting to see what you think about them.

Good luck!

Welcome and best of luck with your challenge! Will be following your detective novels category in particular :)

And I second the wishes to enjoy LOTR. In my two read-throughs, I found The Two Towers very slow going and stalled at about the same place on both attempts. So the second time I just skipped ahead to Return of the King and used a summary of the previous volumes and the movies to fill in the blanks :P I hope your reading of that book will be more successful. :)

Yep, I agree lots to like. Your SF category reminds me I need to finish off Lois McMaster Bujold's Chalion series. I've only read the first, but it was excellent.

Oh, I've read LotR a few times! I just want to make sure I get around to re-reading it this year -- it's been a long time. But thank you for the well wishes. :)

Tanglewood -- I'm hoping to get along to the Chalion series next!

I felt a bit silly dedicating so much of the section to one series, but given that I tore through the first eight books and novellas in a week back in October, it seemed called for. (I'm just guessing I'll have finished the Miles Errant volume by New Year's -- I'm halfway through Brothers in Arms right now.)

I tend to read more fantasy than science fiction, but I'd be interested to know which of Lois McMaster Bujold's SF novels you liked best.

I took a peak at you reviews. Isn't it amazing how Gone Girl can have so many ambivalent readers. It must be the mystery of the book which so many are careful to avoid spoiling that draws new readers.
