Does any one by chance know how to create LOC#s? I have the book "Transparent " by Don Lemon and I can't seem to be able to find a LOC# for it.

thanks,
Drew

Do you want the LC "card" number (the ones that start with the year they cataloged the book 76-1056 or 201200002)

Or do you want an LC class number (the ones that start with letters PS 508 U49 V35)

Class numbers should be loaded to your record if you pick a source that uses them. So in Add Books, I would use Overcat and pick a US library as my source.

LC card numbers are usually in the CIP (Cataloging in Publication) on the title page verso.

I need the PS style # and unfortunately our system is ResurceMate and doesn't have support so we can't look up books >_

This book is not cataloged in the Library of Congress, so it's probable that there is no currently-existing LOC Class number assigned to it. Providing that you are patient and can be pedantic about distinguishing subtle nuances of definition, you ~could~ determine for yourself what it ought to be. let me know if you need/want some help.

{begin official warning} As a (retired) professional librarian, I have to warn you that if you have limited resources, you need to keep things as simple as possible and using LC class numbers is not part of keeping things simple. {end official warning}

You can sometimes find one in the CIP on the title page verso. If there isn't one there, you have go to a library catalog on the web and look the book up. The problem is finding a library that's got the book. If it's new, you should try the Library of Congress www.loc.gov. If it's not there then it's unlikely any other U.S. library has cataloged it yet and you just have to set it aside until someone does. LC keeps improving it, but their catalog is notoriously difficult to use, so search things a number of ways (keywords, author browse, title browse) before giving up.

If it's an older book, I would use Cornell's catalog. They have an excellent collection of lgbt books and use the LC classification. http://www.library.cornell.edu/. Their catalog is much easier to search.

4: It's going to be hard to get the cutter for the title (and for the author if LC hasn't cataloged anything else by him).

well I did find the isbn on the jacket sleeve (not the title page verso like every other book and there is no CIP#) and tried both 13 and 10 on LOC website and no luck there. and trust me LOC was not my choice it was in place when I started working here. I wanted to switch it to Dewey but that got shot down :( Thanks for the info about Cornell I'm going to check there as soon as I'm done typing this reply :)

Wait a minute. You can add the book to your library here on LT as a look-up method. I suspect WholeHouseLibrary is correct and that for this one, you're not going to find any US libraries in OverCat who have cataloged it, but in the future you can add a book you want the information for to your library, copy the information and then delete the book.

7: Dewey is much, much worse!!! If you get a chance, change it to broad categories that everyone can get a handle on (Health, History, Politics, Relationships ...)

10: that's what it was before LOC from what I heard and then some one got the grate idea to change it. I think it might of had to do with us getting ResourceMate :( and Quatrefoil_library has the book in there LT but I didn't see a LOC#

WOOT found it, used WorldCat.org to search libraries and found out that Swarthmore College had it and since they are an academic library they had the LOC# for the book PN1992.4 .L46 2011. thanks again for all the tips and help you guys gave me.
