When I was in Florida recently during the week of Memorial Day I saw several Teen-age guys and guys in their early 20s wearing plastic ear rings in their ear lobes that made their ears droop lower. Is this some kind of a new fad for guys???? What does it all mean?????? How & where did it begin????? I had never seen that til I went to Florida. I wasn't about to go up to a total stranger and ask him why did he do it??? And what does it mean??I know there are some African women that wear neck rings with metal spiral coils to extend their necks. I know in these Cultures they're considered to be beautiful. Does it mean they're in some kinda Gang??? Some kinda Club they belong to??? Do they do just to show they're different from other people?? Do they belong to a College Fraternity??? I called them ear rings because they kinda remind me of the large Hoop ear rings Linda Ronstadt wore in her third Album. But they also remind me of the plastic shower curtain hoops too.

They do it because they think it looks good.

It's not a new fad either. I've seen a lot of it here in Texas for over ten years now. Like tattoos, piercings, tongue bifurcation and subdermal implants, it's a form f drawing attention via self-mutilation.

No offense intended toward those who have done any of these things.

There was one guy at our college had ivory horns SCREWED into his cranium so that they were permanently attached to his head, they were about three inches long and white, he also removed the flesh from his little finger tips from the top knuckle upwards so all that was left was an inch of bone, his brother was a surgeon and got arrested by the police because the rumor was that he'd done the jobs for him but they had to let him go as there wasn't any proof.

Well, Thanks for letting me know. I wasn't aware it had been going on for so long since I only started seeing it this past Summer.

Sorry for dredging up an old thread from over a year ago, but I happened into this thread and wanted to add to it. They are called Gauges, and they aren't anything new - it is a practice firmly rooted in Africa and has been happening there for a very long time. (They also gauge their lips) Basically you get your ear peirced, and then gradually add a larger and larger gauges, slowly stretching your ear lobes over time until they look like the men you saw.

It doesn't have anything to do with a gang, but it is popular among the 'counter-culture' types. Also, I know that it is not just men who do it, because my little sister has some as well, she got them the same time as her boyfriend.

By the way, in case anyone is reading this and confused about what we are talking about, this is what they look like.

The "rings" like the girl is wearing above are definitely increasing in populaity right now.

Yeah, I know about the traditional practice of it, but even the "counter-culture" sort has been going on for some time now.

Where I live, I see it mostly in guys and mostly in Whole Foods and our local food co-op. Just an observation.
