Several of the folks trying to read 75 books in 2012 are going to meet for a little book shopping and light lunch
As of now we are thinking of middle of the day on June 23, maybe a little earlier as one person may have to drive to the airport afterwards to pick up a spouse
If you'd like to join us, post something here and the details will be posted to your private messages on your profile

Checking in.
I wonder if we could shift the location to Capitol Hill? I love TPB but I'd love a trip to Elliott Bay Books, too, and I do live in the south part of the city...... I can do TPB, too, but it might be easier for the airport run if we were further south.
Since one of us has to do a spouse pickup at the airport at 3-ish, if we met at noon, that would make departing for the airport around 2pm quite easy......
"How many book lovers does it take to organize a meet-up?" :-)

OK, with me.

I *might* be able to make it- still not sure. I'd be driving down from Whatcom Co. Anyway, I'll be checking this thread for details!

The only thing is that Third Place Books is having a 40% off sale. I guess I'd rather spend my money there this time. But--if everyone wants to go to EB, I'll be there. :)
6maggie1944
That is a big sale!
7EBT1002
Oh yeah, I forgot about the sale. Yep, that seals it. I think we should meet at TPB.
The one in Ravenna, right? :-|

I would sooooooo love to come over from Montana. I love Seattle and (gasp) have never been to any of the bookstores there.
But--DD is coming home that week from her year in Shanghai. Yay! Happy dance, happy dance.
She & I will probably come to Seattle late July/August as she will be looking at a graduate program there. So perhaps later this summer......

Oh! Be sure to let us know so we can organize a get together! I'd love to do a bookstore tour..... big ones, chain ones, and independent ones!
11streamsong
Sounds like heaven!
12EBT1002
Yes, I'm in, as well for the bookstore tour if it's during a time when I'm in town (which will be much of this summer since work will keep me from vacationing much this year).

No. It's quite a bit smaller. That's why I prefer the Lake Forest one. I'm coming from Sammamish, so Ravenna is closer, but I'd still prefer Lake Forest. More choices of where to eat there too.
15maggie1944
Oh, maybe we need to plan two meetups. One now, and one later....,
I know Lake Forest Park is far for people who live southerly from Seattle. And since the airport is an after meetup destination for someone (I'm sorry, I forget who is picking up a husband, there... sounds like fun, eh?) it does seem like Ravenna is the better choice for this time.
Of course, we could start with lunch and a little shopping at Ravenna and then those who would like to could "adjourn" to Lake Forest Park. It is a Saturday after all...

I'm the one heading to the airport, but I too prefer the Lake Forest location. Not only is it my favorite place, and closer, but the sale is something I plan for as soon as the date is released. I would love a meetup, but not enough to give up the sale. As a book addict, I need my fix! :-) Sorry!
17maggie1944
Wow! Looks like Ravenna is getting out voted. Can everyone make it to Lake Forest Park. I can help with taxi service if needed.
19maggie1944
Yes, I am sure it is.
So, here's what I think are the final (maybe) details: meet at Noon in Third Place Books located in Lake Forest Park and have lunch and chattering. Then go shopping for books!!! in Third Place Books in LFP, where a big sale is happening!
Fun, fun, fun!!

Yay! I'm very excited! FYI, I will have the munchkin with me, doing her own shopping and probably reading. She's nine. I'll wear my LT tshirt for identification purposes. :-)
P.S. We will be coming straight from my daughter's swim lesson and may end up at TPB closer to11:30 if anyone else arrives early. We will probably be downstairs at the Lake Forest Park Library's book sale. Literally just down the escalator from Third Place.

Cool! I'll be looking for you!
22arubabookwoman
A library sale too? Wow!
24maggie1944
Maybe we could all wear something Green? not too weird, and yet it would help us find each other, maybe
26maggie1944
I found the little stuffed green dragon and I'll have it on my table. I'll also look for a forest green long-sleeved shirt! See you, I'm sure. If all else fails, call me on my cell phone. Be sure to take the number with you.
27EBT1002
I'm trying to plan around the Rock n Roll Marathon --- buses may be delayed, etc., but I think I've got my plan all figured out. As long as I have a book with me, if I have to do some waiting, I'll be fine.
29maggie1944
A very nice meeting it was, too! I stuck to my guns and did not buy more books to topple my TBR piles over; but, I think some others may have taken advantage of the sale...
30labfs39
Oh, my goodness, yes. And, shhh, don't tell anyone, but I didn't make it through my list (never made it to history or memoirs at all) before my darling daughter melted down, so I may go back tomorrow! After all, I didn't use up my gift cards, so it must be okay. :-)
32arubabookwoman
It was great fun meeting you all! Karen and Ellen--you left before I could say goodbye. I did a lot of shopping, but I bought mostly gardening books. I had a two page wishlist with me, but only found a couple on the list so I had to buy some that weren't on my list. :)
I hope you post some of your pictures too, Karen

Woo hoo! It was a great time! My first meet-up, ever. I already look forward to another one, and to returning to this wonderful bookstore. The atmosphere and selection were terrific. I would enjoy it even more if I wasn't in buying-restraint mode.... :-|
Thanks for posting the pictures, Lisa and Karen. And -- Lisa and Deborah, sorry I took off without officially saying good-bye (I know I told you I was going to go check out, but not that I would likely head out). Karen offered me a ride to the nearest bus stop (which, it turned out, was very near indeed) and I took her up on that since the rain was falling.
I hope we can do it again sometime.

I have seen one Portland librarything person looking for Meet-ups, and I'm thinking I may begin organizing or lobbying for a Portland Meet-Up. I know that is not as easy as Lake Forest Park, but maybe if we plan well in advance we could do it. There is a former book group member living down that way, too, and it would be cool to be able to see her. Also, I think some members of the Book group might enjoy a "field trip".
41EBT1002
With due planning, I would be up for a meet-up road trip to Portland. That just means I need to get cracking on reading books I own, so that I can take my Powell's tote bag with me and fill it with purchases!
42Donna828
Lovely, lovely pictures. Such happy faces! Lisa, your daughter is a cutie...about the same age as my two oldest granddaughters. I can't believe she had a meltdown. Kidding! One or the other of my sweet grands has one a day when I'm babysitting. Lol.
Don't forget to post lists of the books you got so the rest of us can be even more jealous!

Oh, here are my purchases (what restraint I showed):
Number 9 Dream by David Mitchell
The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
headlong by Michael Frayne
They were all used books, which were 40% off, so I got all three for under $15.

Wow! What a great crew, and the perfect place for a meet-up. So glad Lisa's daughter got to come too.
Thanks for making me smile.

How fun! Thanks for sharing the pictures. And I am a Portlander that would love a meet-up. : )
47maggie1944
Berly - How about some time in late August? or early September (avoiding Labor Day). When would work for you? And any one else interested... when?
48GeorgiaDawn
I'm so glad you all had a good time and got to meet each other in person!

It is SO much fun to read about these meetups. And Seattle is a place a I would love to get to. Especially like putting together faces with familiar LT names!

I am really keen to be able to make a/some meet-ups. I am 2 hours from Seattle and Portland each. But would attempt to make any on the West Coast if I should know of them in time to make arrangements. The only one left is Joplin, Mo and that is a $600.00 airline ticket plus hotel & food for me. Won't work this year. Would love to go as I have met Stasia when visiting my daughter in the Dallas area and would love to see her again. Will be saving my pennies for the future and checking this group more often than in this past year. R/L has really been interfering in MY life. lol!~!
I don't know if you were able to plan a Portland meet up but will keep checking back.
hugs,

I was thinking about a Portland Meet-Up. I am not in a spot to start "promoting" one just right now. But maybe after Thanksgiving I can give some thought to it. Can you remember to bring it up again? In a few weeks, or maybe you can just start looking around for some folks and you can start planning one. I would surely come if I can find a way to do it

I am right in the middle. Two hours South of Seattle and two hours North of Portland. I don't know my way around Portland. In fact I have never been in downtown Portland. Just around or over....... . Many years ago I lived on Capitol Hill in Seattle but that was in the late 60s and have only been back for some trips to Pike Place Market, concerts and events and always someone else has been driving. I could probably make it to the Elliot Bay Book Company as I used to go there by bus. But the other shops I am not familiar with nor the areas either.
However........if I could get some good directions I would love to join you for next year's meet up in both cities unless we are on the road for an extended camping trip.
It sounds like you all had a really good time. And I would love to meet you all. Stasia is the only L.T.er I have met in R/L.
I will be checking back now and again to see what and if plans are being made. :-)
(I know that Berly has mentioned wanting to have a meet-up down Portland way.)

I'm also interested in coming over from Montana.
BTW, here's a link to a thread about a location wiki if anyone is interested in adding themselves.

Meet-Up
Sorry for short notice: Saturday, January 5, 2013, Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, north of Seattle on the Bothell highway. 12:30 for lunch, meet at one of the tables in the area in front of the stage. Each person can pick their own lunch from the little cafe booths. We can shop in the bookstore afterwards.
As of now I think it will be 3-4 women meeting together. I am 5'2", wear glasses, longish brown hair, and I'll probably have my MacBook Air on the table. I also have a bright red messenger type bag that the computer rides in. If you would like a cell phone number give me a hollar on a PM and I'll PM you my number. Love to see some new faces, you are welcome to join us.

Saturday, January 26th, American Library Association is meeting at the Seattle Convention Center. There has been some chatting about getting together at the end of Saturday for a Library Thing Meet-Up - maybe a craft brewery, or nice cafe. Is anyone familiar enough with Saturday night in downtown Seattle to make a suggestion of a place near the Convention Center?
