For me personally, I wouldn't include any works of fiction.

A few books that I've read that I might include:

1700s: The Glorious Cause by Robert Middlekauff
1800s: The Rise of American Democracy by Sean Wilentz
2000s: The 9/11 Commission Report by National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States
