June 2012's SK Flavor of the Month - Bag of Bones

Sorry I'm late. I'm still stuck in Wizard and Glass. True love is boring, indeed!

I have to say though that I am really looking forward to Bag of Bones. I've never read it and have only the vaguest idea of what it is about. I also hear the miniseries is pretty good.

I only read it once, when it first came out, so I'll probably jump on the bandwagon for this one. : )

I just read this when the mini-series came out. Think I'll sit this one out. But a great book!

Am 66 pages in. Continue to be amazed at how well King portrays loss and the interior of a marriage. It's almost like he's telling us about his experiences though I doubt that much about it is autobiographical. The details are what makes it so intimate feeling. Very expressive.

I've just hit page... 70-something? After slogging through Wizard and Glass, I am LOVING Bag of Bones! I like that everything is a complete surprise. I've avoided even reading the synopsis on this one.

I'm getting ready to start Bag of Bones tonight while my husband finishes A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin. I've never read BoB before so I'm looking forward to it.

Hey! My sentence got cut off! Sorry. I was saying it would be too easy to see Mike as a stand-in for Stephen King., though I don't think he is.

I've 200+ pages in. Mike just listened to the tape. That was a nice, shivery moment to end a chapter on.

I haven't done my research on this one, since I didn't want to spoil any of the surprise. But the book feels much more like an old fashioned ghost story than your usual Stephen King book. The first person narrative, references to Mrs Danvers (I really need to read some Daphne du Maurier), the image of the shrouded fiend running out of the cabin, the back story (what I've gotten so far anyway) of Sara... I almost wonder if he wrote it as a challenge to himself.

Is that the basement owl quest scene? Agreed, it was pretty shivery. I liked it so much I read it aloud.

Definitely feel like this is somewhat autobiographical in the sense that he's telling from the perspective of a professional writer, albeit a mid-lister, which frankly, King has never been. But I also don't think the details are quite exact although who am I to know? Like that Jo had to pin notes to his shirt when he was in the zone. Does T have to do that for Steve, who knows, but it's those details that make their relationship seem real and bring the heartbreak of Mike's situation home to the reader. At least this reader.

I just finished reading Bag of Bones! I enjoyed it very much.

I feel like someone said that Flagg from The Eyes of the Dragon appears in other stories. Could he be the Outsider?

I read this book about ten years ago and I loved it. I'm partial to ghost stories and this was very effective and creepy.

Liked the ghost story aspect, although it went in a different direction than I was expecting. I thought the whole child custody case just sort of petered out after a lot of build-up. But I especially liked the flashback scenes and the dream-like sequence of the carnival. That was particularly well-done, I thought.
