The Atlantic Monthly is, I thiink, one of the most thought provoking magazines around. They have a number of offshoots on the web, including The Atlantic Cities; note the area for the e-newsletter which will get you a daily summary of articles. It's broader than the name implies sometimes, including some articles touching on maps as convenient ways to make a point or two. The articles have links to further depth about the topic at hand.

Recently, there have been a couple of articles related to maps:

One on various aspects of life, demography and politics in the US. I found the baseball map especially interesting and colorful.

Another on 7 deadly sins - shudder. Unfortunately for our mutual improvement, the article only covers sloth, greed and LUST! Is your attention captured?

Another on peaceful or otherwise areas in the USA. Alas, my hometown, Chicago, doesn't do so well here.

Yet another on livehoods, (nothing like making up words) and The Digital Neighborhood. It includes New York City, San Francisco and ta-da Pittsburgh.

If you search "maps" on The Atlantic Cities site, you will find many more.

I would be remiss not to supply a link to what may be the most interesting, riveting video you may see this year, even though it has nothing to do with maps; a time lapse video of a mural on the building and decline of an urban area.

The Atlantic Cities has put forth an interesting compilation on, to quote them, 6 Great Transit Maps That Aren't Transit Maps.

A further note regarding The Atlantic Cities... They just today come out with a collection of whimsical, imaginative and unusual maps under the title, Femme-Fatales of Cartography.' You might find it interesting, thought provoking and/or amusing.

Enabled again - could not resist adding this one to my atlas collection.
It seems to go under the title "A Map of the World According to Illustrators and Storytellers" in the UK.

Here is another Atlantic Cities article. This one maps showing Boston over the years. I knew that Logan Airport was on fill, but I didn't realize that so much of Boston had been filled over the years.

As an offbeat bonus, here is a link to a web site by a fellow now living in New York City. He has, for lack of a better word, a hobby of stopping people in NYC and asking for directions to something fairly nearby. He comes equipped with various pens and paper scraps (see the lower photo for more detail and the idea of it) and gradually he will have much of NYC mapped in, to say the least, a creative way. I'm not quite sure if this is an advance in cartography or not, but it is interesting and, perhaps, art.
