It's been awfully quiet in this group -- I thought this topic might liven things up a bit! I know we all love to tell stories of cute or funny things our pets do.

A year ago, I moved into an apartment in a busier area of town than my previous home, and sometimes fire trucks and other vehicles with sirens go by on our street. This is a new phenomenon, as far as Sophie is concerned, and she has learned to howl on pitch with the sirens. I first discovered this when she woke me up in the middle of the night: "RrrrrrooOOOOOWWwwwwrowrowrowrrrRRROOOOwwww. . ." It makes me laugh every time!

Is she all or part German Shepherd? When I was young we used to go watch our neighbor's dog at noon in the Summer when we were bored, because when the siren blew at exactly 12:00 each day she always howled along with it.

My girls don't howl at all!

I got her from the animal shelter (and all they knew about her was that she was found on the side of the road), so there's no telling what mix of breeds went in to making her -- but from her size and coloring I would not suspect German Shepherd. She looks to me like a schnauzer mixed with . . . ??? Something with a different body shape and longer legs than a schnauzer. (She's in my Facebook photos, clammy, if you are curious!) And the howling along with the sirens is similar to the voice she uses when she is bossing me around or trying to get me to play with her -- not a typical "ahwoooo" howling sound (she never does that), but more of a growly "rowrowrow" sound. (Boy, it's hard to explain dog sounds in a text-only medium!)

Ah, yes. I get the bossing around sound from Rosie but not from Sammie. I get it especially if I'm not doing something fast enough for her, like putting her food dish on the floor.

My dog Flynn (who spent the first 4 years of his life as a show / breeding dog before coming to live with me) has now well and truly settled into the life of pampered household pet ... but just recently decided he might like to try being a lapdog. All of a sudden one evening he just decided to launch onto my lap (after taking a run-up the length of the passage). At about 21kg (sorry - don't know what that is in pounds - but definitely not small!) he is way more than a lapful - I have to hold on tight just to stop him rolling over the arms of the chair, and when he sits up straight he rests his chin on the top of my head! Then he tries to roll over so I can rub his belly... I sit in a recliner, and with the footrest up he extends from my chin, along my torso and legs, almost to my toes. We might look ridiculous, but he's one happy "lapdog"!! :)

My Tirzah likes to 'talk', especially vocal when we come home from work...sort of a "rauw" (rhymes with ow!) repeated several times. Barking is discouraged, however, as I don't want her barking at anything and everything. The only time she is supposed to bark is if "something's going on outside". I'll say in an urgent voice: "Tirzah! Whatisit???" and she'll bound down the hallway to the door.

When she does bark, she has that deep and scary German Shepherd bark (momma was a GS, daddy was a lab), which is enough to make someone's heart skip a beat.

#6 -- Yes! The "rauw-rauw-rauw" sound is the one Sophie makes. I could never figure out, growing up, why some picture books had dogs saying "bow-wow," since all of the dogs I knew had a sharp bark or a deeper woof. But I can see how Sophie's "rauw-rauw" might translate in some people's minds to "bow-wow."

Foggidawn, is she the dog on your profile picture? Looks a lot like a Münsterländer to me: Large Münsterländer and Small Münsterländer

#9 -- No, the dog on my LT profile is Joy, the dog my family had when I was growing up. She was an English Springer Spaniel. (She died in 2008.) I really ought to update my profile picture, but I love that picture of Joy (especially with the stack of books, for this site), so I have left it.

Well, Huskie my 12 year old white Alaskan Husky got "kicked out of grooming". How embarrassing. More like an Oh no moment than an AWWW moment. They said he peed and pooped all over the table and was otherwise totally uncooperative. Same groomer he went to the last couple of years to be shaved for the summer. He ended up getting actually a very nice looking shave but she said she didn't want to do it again. Tried to say she thought it was because he was getting old. I guess next year we'll have to try to sedate him and do it ourselves.

Tirzah likes to play ball, and she tries to carry more than one ball at a time. Sometimes she'll have a tennis ball in her mouth, only to pick up a soccer ball too! I wonder if she's going to choke herself one day trying to stuff two or three balls in her mouth.

Hamish loves to bury his head in the snow, rub his face in it, and roll around to cool off. Now the snow is almost gone he sometimes tries to roll in a puddle the way he would in snow and sometimes he forgets and tries to get his face in it, but he can't breathe under water the way he can in snow...

My dog, Tipson, raised from a puppy, now 8 1/2 yo, greets me at the top of the stairs I come up from my garage when I come home from work. He waits until my mouth about reaches his and he gives me a kiss on the mouth. I feel like I'm getting a welcome home kiss from a SO.

Gwennie (our late English bulldog) used to love to chew the caps off of plastic bottles. She also sucked on stuffed toys like a pacifier. :)

Talinn (our new dog; Borzoi/Russian wolfhound) loves to give hugs. She is a very tall dog. When she greets you, she gets on her hind legs and gently lays her front paws on your shoulders and nuzzles you with her nose...it is a hug and kiss. :) I love it!

I'm up late this evening, and Sophie disapproves. She has been giving me very pointed looks, and a few minutes ago when I went into the bedroom for something, she jumped up on the bed. She then used her paw to pat at the bed -- probably just pawing at the air, but it looked to me like she was trying to get me to get in bed, as I will pat the bed to get her to jump up on it sometimes!

foggi, I've missed visiting with everyone and their pups.

My pup, Ben is a very camera friendly dog. He thinks he's done such a good thing when I pull out the camera or IPhone to get his latest. Last fall, we rented a home on Lake Michigan, as we were descending the stairs we all stopped to view the beautiful sunset...then noticed Ben hadn't moved......we actually went awwwwww and snapped the pic. He may be a silly boy but he appreciates natures art too.

Beautiful pic of Ben enjoying the sunset Bons!

>16 foggidawn: I have no doubt Sophie was telling you to get into bed! I work evening shift so usually sleep 2a-10a. If I'm up past 2 my parrot (whose cage is in my office) hollers until I go out and shut off the lights.

Since I get up late, I normally go into my office and call my SO on the phone intercom. He usually brings me up a cup of coffee and a bone biscuit for each of the dogs. Today my phone came out of the charger and I wasn't able to signal downstairs. After several minutes, my dog Tipson went to the top of the stairs, looked down and started this crying (typical of Newfoundlands that he has). Brian didn't hear him so in a few minutes he went back out and tried it again. Eventually I got the intercom charged enough to buzz him. He said he hadn't heard Tipson but got a big kick out of it. Of course I praised Tipson for trying to be a substitute for the intercom.

Just had a fun few minutes watching Hamish chase and pop balloons.

After our college convocation on Friday, I scooped a bunch of the balloons used for decoration. There was a big bunch with mostly blue and white balloons plus two silver foil balloons. I still have the two silver foil ones, but let Hamish have the others, which had lost their lift. He wouldn't touch them until I'd removed the silver ones (doesn't like those for some reason). Then he chased them, tossed them up in the air, jumped on them, and acted surprised when they popped. Then looked for another. He had so much fun! Macduff (cat) was trying to help, but Hamish didn't give him a chance.

I have so many to choose from I want to tell them all...a common problem with dog owners I think. ;)

But I will stick with the most recent cuteness.

I recently went away to visit my parents without my husband or dogs. I was gone for 5 days!! That is unheard of for my dogs. My husband travels all the time but I am never gone for more than 2 days. When I got home on Tuesday I had the "OMG YOU"RE HOME I CAN'T BELIEVE IT WE THOUGHT YOU WERE GONE FOREVER I HAVE A BONE DO YOU WANT THIS TOY SHOULD WE GO OUTSIDE? DO YOU WANT TO SCRATCH ME SHOULD I LICK YOUR FACE YOUR BAG SMELLS LIKE TREATS!!!" That happens everytime my husband goes away and comes home. After all of that I sat down on the couch and my big Data boy at 50lbs came over and asked to be picked up so I did and I placed him in my lap and he sat there with his head resting on my shoulder for about 10 mins or so. Every so often taking a second to lick some part of my face. It was such a wonderful moment for me I never wanted it to end. But eventually my other dog got jealous and kicked him out of my lap and had me rub her belly for a while before they were done with me.

Dogs are the best!

Aaw Mandy,
Data so missed you. How sweet that homecoming!

I hung up a hummingbird feeder, which I do in July because I'm home (off work for the month)... My new adoption, Greta, decided it was her personal mission to be sure to prevent any hummingbirds from landing on it. She jumps (fortunately she can't reach it) and scares the birds away--they fly to the top of our hill, Greta races up the hill, while the hummer zooms down grabs a drink, Greta races down (she has to detour around a fence to keep her from completely trampling the plants), snaps and jumps, hummer flies back up the hill....they go back and forth. One time they repeated this routine 4 times before the hummer left. She now lays most of the day on the patio waiting vigilantly for the hummer to show up. It keeps her exercised, but I worry about the poor little hummingbird...

Crazy Greta!

My dog knows the word 'bird', and when we see a bird at our kitchen window bird feeder, we say "Tirzah, BIRD!" and she races up to the window to see it.

But here's the really smart thing...if we say "BIRD!" in another room, she looks out the window there, as if she knows that birds are available at any/every window.

Well...I think it's smart. :)

27doggonelaura
Jul 19, 2012, 6:39 pm

That's smart!! My other dog races outside if he hears a thump on the window--so obviously he's found stunned birds in the bushes below the windows. He's not smart enough to know the difference between the front windows and the back--but he checks the back bushes after any thumb noise. We've had to buy these leaf decal things and put them all over the back windows which have helped prevent the large number of birds leaving the feeder from hitting the windows.

Aren't those funny things! For Greta, maybe add some challenge here & still provide for your hummers by adding a second feeder? Although this is so cute.

My brothers dog does the same as Tirzah for SQUIRREL...they whisper it even.

Ben is our peacekeeper. A few years back he adopted a kitten found in a storm drain, Jack. I think I posted pics on Ben's page here...they are buds. So if Jack goes to sharpen the claws on anything other than the cats scratchers....Ben can be two rooms away and he'll jump off the sofa or bed to go stop Jack.....before my husbands slipper sails thru the air! If there's a tift between the two cats......here comes Ben to jump in the middle and break it up. Our resident peace officer we chuckle as he makes extra brownie points with Dad for watching out for the furniture. = )

Tirzah hates fighting. If the outside strays fight, she barks at them, scaring them out of fighting. When Java and Moonpie (inside cats) fuss with each other, Tirzah races to the scene where her mere appearance breaks up the melee.
