I think this came from a book of short stories. It was probably from the 70's or 80's.

A woman is locked in a room that used to be a nursery. There are layers of wallpaper on the wall and I think she eventually starts peeling them off. She becomes convinced that there is a woman under the wallpaper and is trying to free the woman. In the end she goes mad and believes she is the woman that escaped from the wallpaper and spends her time circling the room with a sneaky walk, making a groove in the wallpaper where her shoulder touches the wall.

Ah yes, someone on another site guessed it also. I had no idea the story was so old, it must have been reprinted in the book I had because my book wasn't that old.

Thanks!

I was going to suggest "The Yellow Wallpaper", too, although it's been years since I
read it & I don't remember the specifics - except the going-mad part. This book was
"found" and re-published in the 1970s as part of the boom in publishing books by
women authors. It's a good if sad read. It was published under the above name as
a separate book, but it is short.

And I especially recommend this particular edition because it's published by Virago. I think the ISBN-10 is 1844085589.
