Favorite (and least favorite) companions

Well, we've had favorite Doctors and favorite villians, so I think we now need a favorite companions thread.

For my part, I'm always happy when K-9 puts in an appearance, and I liked Leela. Her barbarian ways were a happy counterbalance to the Doctor's pacifism.

Bernice Summerfield without a doubt.

if we're talking TV companions only then I nominate Sarah Jane, Romana (1st incarnation) and Rose as favourites.

I used to favour Ace until I started reading the New Adventures a couple of years ago - I grew to really dislike her by the time she finally left the TARDIS.

TV companions, First is Sarah Jane, then Rose get my votes. I do have a soft spot for K-9 though.

Mmmmm, I don't count the books when having any favorites - So for me, Ace will always be the most favored companion from the original series!

For the new one, Rose was great, but I prefer Martha!

For me, lack of screaming in episodes is always a good thing!

For me, it has to be Ace (with Rose tying with Sarah-Jane for second).

I didn't read the NAs, so thankfully I haven't had to deal with what I've heard about Ace in them. I do love what Big Finish have been doing with her, though.

Sarah Jane and Rose.
Did anyone see the one-off special around Christmas of sarah jane’s own show? What’s happening with that?

a recent BBC press release says "The Sarah Jane Adventures" will go to air in Autumn (whenever that might be)

It's been a long time since anyone has bothered to post anything here so I'll get it going again. My favourite Doctor Who villains has to be The Master, of course. And the Daleks. IMHO opinion Roger Delgado was the original Master was the best. I think he looked like he really was evil. I don't care too much for the other versions of The Master. I mean I'll watch the episodes but they don't stand up to Roger Delgado.

I guess one of my least favourite Doctor Who villains would have to be the Sontarans. I also like the Silurians too. The Master and Daleks always proved to give the Doctor problems whenever he faced them.

Yea, I had forgotten aboutIan Marter as Harry Sullivan. He was a Doctor for U.N.I.T. Then there was also Lela who was with Tom Baker on some of his adventures. And Jackie Lane as Dodo Chaplet, Ian Chesterton, Jacqueline Hill as Barbara Wirght Carole Ann Ford as Susan Foreman all travelled with William Hartnell for awhile as his companions.

Sarah Jane Smith had always been one of my favourite companions as well as K-9 of course. I also liked Barbara, Ian, Jo Grant and Liz Shaw too. Liz Shaw was a Scientist like The Doctor and could assist him in his experiments much better than some of his other companions.

Tegan was always fun. Turlough kept things interesting.
Peri was my least favorite, too much whine.

So far I've got to go with Zoe and Jamie being my favorites, with Jo being my least favorite. The stupid ones always bother me :-) I'll probably change my mind as I go, though, I'm just up to season 9 (The Curse of the Peladon to be exact :-) ) And for my favorite bad guy, I'm gonna say the Celestial Toymaker.

Bernice Summerfield she first appeared in the Virgin New Adventures Love and War.
Fitz Kreiner he first appeared in BBC Books Eighth Doctor Adventure The Taint.

If we're talking TV...
Tegan was great, okay she didn't want to be there for her first few, but in Frontios she's surprisingly knowledgable about things.

Jo Grant was great, she had escapology training!

Romana II also a favourite, but she really shone as a character when the Doctor wasn't around. The scenes between her and Duggan in City of Death are brilliant.

That said there's something to be said for the classics, Susan was a brilliant character, but she really was fantastic in An Unearthly Child when we didn't know anything about her and she was a bit odd and alien (a lot of that got toned down, disappointingly). Ian and Barbara are also a favourite just for the wide eyed disbelief and often openness they go about everything, which other companions could decide to be an Aztec god? Plus Ian was remarkably good at a variety of fighting styles for a science teacher.

Speaking for the new series, I liked Rose in series 1 especially episodes Rose and The Parting of the Ways (where she's in the fish and chips shop talking to Mickey and her mum. That part was brilliant). She got a bit fangirlish during series 2. The same can be said for Martha although I liked her fairly well. Donna and The Doctor had a good vibe, but I didn't care for her that much.

Donna was the best, she bought humour :D, In the unicorn and the wasp, when they met Agatha Christie, Donna took on a posh English accent and started saying "Good afternoon, my lady. Topping day, what. Spiffing. Top-hole."
It made me laugh :D

Favourite book companions: Bernice Summerfield (first appearance Love and War) and Fitz Kreiner (first appearance Doctor Who and the Taint).

Favourite TV companion, there's something to be said for the original and the classic combination of Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright.

There's just so many, but I always liked Nyssa and Zoe. From the new series, Martha, from the books Fitz, from the audios Evelyn.

But there really have been so many great companions.

I have a soft spot for Donna, and was very pleased to hear that Catherine Tate and David Tennant will be starring together in Much Ado About Nothing in London's West End starting in the middle of May.

I just love Rose. She has courage, and compassion, and a good sense of adventure, and she works well both with the Doctor and as a counter-balance. She has the same drive to do the right thing, no matter the cost. And she's lot of fun. I also like Donna for her fearlessness and humor.
I can't stand Martha. Her instant crush on the Doctor was juvenile; she seems scattered and flaky, and not terribly self-possessed. I would expect better of a med student/doctor. Funny how the less-well-educated companions come across as so much sharper.

I haven't seen much of the classic companions yet, but I liked Zoe and Jamie very much, and of course I love Sarah Jane!

I think I like companions only in combo with the Doctors. Most are total ciphers. My favourite Doctor + Companion pairings, in order:

1. 4th Doc + Romana II

I like that they are equals, and they seem to share a similar wacky sense of humour. But they are ahead of the pairing at #2 only because Four, when all is said and done, is the Once & Future King of Doctor Who.

2. 7th Doc + Ace

Possibly the best pairing ever, the only one where both characters seem to enjoy their adventures on exactly the same terms, with the same curiosity, elan etc.

3. 12th Doc + Bill + Nardole

Great as a trio, great as sub-pairings, Bill & Nardole needed more stories where they BANTER with each other.

4. 10th Doc + Donna

They're funny together.

5. 13th Doc + "The Fam"

"Spyfall" showed how excellent they could be together. That said, three companions will always be at least one too many.
