In the 'Most Wanted' topic thread Groovy and Clifford both mentioned wanting to 'trade up' from Blue Moon editions to Grove Press ones. Printing dirty books has always been a dodgy enterprise. Grove Press, and Olympia Press before them, certainly spent a lot of cash on lawyers. Both of these enterprises still exist, albeit in retreaded forms. I'm curious as to what other players there have been over the past fifty years or so, and what you think about the quality of their output (in terms of binding, as well as artistic merit). Oddly enough, the Book-of-the-Month Club was one, with their Library of Erotic Classics in the 90's. And the Erotic Print Society had perhaps 80 titles (haven't seen a bibliography).

So - what else is out there? And are there histories and/or bibliographies extent? Olympia seems well covered, but what of the rest?

I seem to remember that the Quality Paperback Book Club had a few erotic titles-The Story of O, Justine, Juliette, to name a few.
Is Black Lace still printing? They had a few good titles and authors, as I remember. A lot of historical fiction.

I have both the Blue Moon and the Grove Press copies of a number of the books, and like the Groves much better. I did run across a book of photography by the photographer who did some of the covers, and it had some high-quality originals. When I get home I'll try to find the author.

So it turns out that www.books-by-isbn.com provides a publisher index (assuming the publisher uses isbn, which is another issue). The listings come up with publication date, isbn, author & title, often with links to cover images and other information. I found Blue Moon Books (with 8 titles), Olympia Press (many) and Grove Press (many - not all naughty, of course). I also found Black Lace - although not listed by that name, plugging in one of their isbn brought up the list - and yes, they are still printing. You can check out their website, if you're interested.

The Erotic Print Society listing showed over 140 titles - they were busier than I'd guessed - and at that, the index missed a few. Incidentally, EPS press seems to have been lightly resurrected: they are now ER Books, with a half dozen digital-only titles. I don't know if their trademark graphics survived that transition.

Very pleased to hear of the second coming (oo-er!) of the Erotic Print Society, and the new ER titles look very promising. May just have to break down and buy one of these kindle contraptions!

Three further publishers of erotica are 1) Masquerade, although I think the name has changed hands, and is difficult to search for, with added confusion from a 'bodice-ripper' publisher; 2) Star, who also ceased to function decades ago but still turning up second-hand; and 3) Chimera, who seem to have found a new impetus.

And of course there's Headline/Delta, on the 'softer' side, and Excite, relatively new, and perhaps a bit over-trendy.
