There seems to be quite an interest here in reading narrative non-fiction for it's own sake rather than for the topic. So I thought it might be helpful if people listed some of their favorite narrative non-fiction reads of the past couple years. Here are mine:
Unlikely Disciple and In the Land of Believers: Two books about non-fundamentalists "going underground" in Jerry Falwell's church in Virginia. They're pretty similar, so I'd read one or the other, not both. I ended up skimming the second one, because it was so similar to Unlikely Disciple.
Bait and Switch A new journalism look at the difficulties of mid-life career change.
Voluntary Madness A new journalism look what it's like to commit oneself to different types of treatment facilities for the mentally ill.
Agent Zigzag a very interesting tale of a World War II double agent.
Island in a Storm while this has a narrative element (the story of what happened to people on a barrier island on the Gulf Coast in a hurricane in the 19th century (the island got washed away), I wouldn't call it narrative non-fiction because there's lots of non-narrative information on barrier islands, hurricanes and weather forecasting. But the science stuff goes down smoothly.
