I know there are LTers in the UK!

But if any of them are interested in meeting up somewhere, this might be a good place to start the discussions about when and where - and could spawn subthreads if all of the UK is too difficult.

potentially yes - somewhere Manchestery feels good

Manchester certainly works for me.

I'm always up for an LT meet up.

I've just completed my Masters degree but as yet not back in employment, so money is a mite tight at the moment. This means location might be a bit of a concern: London/south east (e.g. Cambridge) meetups not an issue, travelling might be.

Anyone thinking of going to the Cheltenham Science Festival 12-17 June 2012?

Ene 9, 2012, 9:39 am

Would be interested in a meetup, though not Cheltenham in June - sorry!

Grammath, I'm in Norwich (weekends) or Staines (weekdays), so might be able to offer transport to wherever.

Anyone going to the London Book Fair?

Just added a thread about Bristol Lit fest - am happy to do a meet up at that - its in October

Definitely interested in a meet-up, anywhere reasonable considered. Bristol would be fine by me.

Hi - I'd be interested in London area-ish.

Jul 5, 2012, 9:53 am

Bristol Lit fest is in October, event list out in September - there is a competition as part of the fest too:

For five people to win seven titles delivered to their door, we're asking folks to email us the answer to the following headscratcher: Who wrote War & Peace?
Was it: a) Andy McNab, b) Leo Sayer, c) Leo Tolstoy, or d) Lionel Messi?
Email your answers to: contact@unputdownable.org
Five correct answers will be chosen from our hi-tch 'randomiser' - deadline is midnight 15 July 2012
Winners announced at 'Meet Jasper Fforde' @ Foyles Bookshop, Mon 16 July, 6pm. Be there!

We could do a meet up for LTers who can be at the Jasper Fforde event - you'll need to e-mail Foyles for a ticket at bristolevents@foyles.co.uk

Resuscitating this thread to ask if there could be a Manchester-y meet soon-ish, it sounds interesting.
I'm new to LT and this could be a nice way to meet people :)

Hi and welcome ScarletBea - yes, I would be interested

According to my experience of trying to organise real-life meetings with forum people (admitedly limited), the best way is to fix a date and then wait for people to show up, hehe
Looking at this thread, we could have 3 people :)

What if we aim for May 11? Are 2 weeks enough to spread the word? It does rely on people seeing this thread, though...

16TimSharrock
Abr 27, 2013, 11:54 am

I will check my diary, and see if she will let me :) (I know I am already out playing games the following weekend down in Burton...)

17TimSharrock
Abr 27, 2013, 6:34 pm

May 11 would be fine for me - but may be a bit short notice to gather interest?

18ScarletBea
Abr 28, 2013, 5:57 am

I think you're right...
The next available date for me is June 1 (since I think many people will skip the bank holiday weekend).

How do you propose advertising the meet here?
Maybe contact reading_fox via comment on his/her profile page?
Create a new thread with the meet date and place on the title, and keep bumping it?

19TimSharrock
Abr 28, 2013, 6:15 am

new thread seems good, and I think it would probably be ok to send private profile messages to people with public locations nearby

Might it be best to arrange it to coincide with a literary festival or similar event? Then people might be encouraged to make the journey, whereas you might find people less prepared to travel for just a meet? Might just widen the net of potential users.

21ScarletBea
Abr 28, 2013, 6:30 am

20> Speaking for myself, I think those are things with 2 very different purposes: attending a literary festival (of which there are few and far between...) and meeting other people interested in books that live within the area.
I don't expect people to travel lots for this meet (for example I'm about 45 mins away, that's the limit, I guess), and I would assume there would be other small/er meets being organised throughout the country.

#18 - I watch the talk fairly often - enough to catch threads like this anyway!

I can't do the 11th. 1st is possible currently. Could try and work out a book shop tour list through manchester? I only really use the big waterstones and mostly buy ebooks these days. But if someone knows all the interesting 2nd hand shops and doens't mind showing them to us, that could be fun for an afternoon.

23ScarletBea
Editado: mayo 4, 2013, 2:29 pm

The 1st is OK, but to be honest I prefer to visit bookshops on my own... maybe we can arrange to meet at a cafe or pub for a chat for a couple of hours, say, 2 to 4, and this way people still have time to do other stuff in Manchester if they want, book-related or not, together with other people from the meet or not.
Is it ok?

Edit to add: I hope I didn't sound offputting - I was just commenting on the fact that I'm a bit of an introvert, and prefer small groups and controlled environments (tend up to be in a corner in big groups), so was describing my preferred way of meeting people from forums :)

mayo 22, 2013, 6:49 am

Hi ScarletBea, a meet up of UK LT'ers sounds good to me, I am Wakefield based but willing to travel a reasonable distance. Bit tied up at the moment though as my father-in-law had a stroke last thursday so busy with visits etc. Will keep in touch and maybe we can arrange a meet up in a cafe for a book chat.

25ScarletBea
mayo 23, 2013, 12:31 pm

Hi all, well, it seems that June 1st will be coming and going without a meeting, hehe.
After that, I can only do the 29th, but I didn't really want to be the organiser, little introvert me, hehe - I just show up :)

I'm going to be in Manchester for a conference July 20-28, if anyone wants to do another meetup a month later....

27TimSharrock
mayo 23, 2013, 4:09 pm

25> we may all be the same!.... what we need is a visiting expert #26 !

28_Zoe_
mayo 23, 2013, 5:32 pm

Hehe. I guess it might be an advantage that I have limited date options: basically Saturday July 20 in the afternoon/evening, Sunday July 21 in the morning/afternoon, Saturday July 27 in the afternoon/evening, or Sunday July 28 at any time. Dinner during the week may also be possible.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Manchester. I'd be interested in both bookshop visiting and just sitting and chatting somewhere with food.

29TimSharrock
mayo 23, 2013, 5:44 pm

Well the University of Manchester Ancient Historians often eat after seminars on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curry_Mile (and I occasionally join them via my connection to Alison Sharrock, so could ask for advice). That area is about 30 minutes walk from the city centre.

I don't know bookshops in the city well (though I have visited Waterstones occasionally). My favourite little bookshop is out in Altrincham at the end of the Tram, but is probably not worth travelling far to visit.

30_Zoe_
mayo 23, 2013, 5:48 pm

I'll be staying in a dorm near Curry Mile, so either starting or ending there would certainly be convenient for me.

31kidzdoc
Editado: mayo 23, 2013, 8:13 pm

Zoë, if my plans come together as expected I'll be staying in London from roughly July 13-26. There are several plays that I want to see at the National Theatre and elsewhere in the capital, and I usually try to see them with Fliss (flissp) if possible, especially on the weekends. I haven't been to Manchester, though, so I'd be interested in a meet up there if one takes place while I'm in the UK.

ETA: I noticed that it takes just over two hours to reach Manchester Piccadilly Station from London Euston Station by train, so that would be a doable trip.

32ScarletBea
mayo 24, 2013, 3:04 am

27> hehe, ok, but I know more about places to meet in Leeds than in Manchester - the places there I know tend to be too small for bigger groups.
And yes, Waterstone's, but it's big :)

31> only an american would think that going to Manchester for the day is a reasonable day trip from London :)

I prefer saturdays.

33TimSharrock
mayo 24, 2013, 3:56 am

32> Saturdays would be good for me too (though I could make weekday evenings or Sunday afternoon).

I have been down to London for day-trips, so it is just the same really (and if HS2 gets built on current plans, son #2 could get on the train at Euston, and roll his cricket-bag off the train at the proposed interchange and walk to his cricket club in time for the toss).

(Train fares on the London/Manchester line at peak times are extremely expensive, but it is sometimes possible to pre-book much cheaper)

34_Zoe_
mayo 24, 2013, 7:06 am

Excellent! So let's aim for Saturday, July 20? My flight gets in at 10am, so if all goes well I should be able to meet for lunch, and then we can go from there.

I'd suggest starting with lunch at one of the places on Curry Mile, and then wandering back towards the downtown area. Presumably the half-hour walks should happen before we hit the bookstores :)

A possible concern: at least some of the Curry Mile restaurants may be closed for the day during Ramadan, but presumably there are sufficient non-Muslim ones as well?

Darryl, I heard from someone else as well that pre-booking that train is absolutely essential to get a reasonable price.

Thanks for the information about the London to Manchester train fares, Tim.

Zoë, it's now all but completely certain that I'll visit London in July, as I have been given the 22nd & 23rd off from work; that means I'm off from July 13-28. However, I remembered last night that there are several LTers in the 75 Books group and Club Read that I had made tentative plans to meet with this summer in the capital, along with the husband of the late JanetinLondon, so I might not be able to make it to Manchester that day. And, Fliss and I often get together on weekends to see plays at the National Theatre. I'll touch base with them over the next week or two after I make hotel and flight reservations, and if I'm free on the 20th I'll plan to come to Manchester. I'll let you know ASAP.

36_Zoe_
mayo 24, 2013, 8:25 am

Thanks for the update; I hope you'll be able to make it up!

Saturday the 27th would also be a possibility if you're still in the UK then.

37kidzdoc
mayo 24, 2013, 8:39 am

I'll probably leave on the 26th or 27th, so that I have at least one or two days to do laundry, buy groceries, etc. before I return to work.

I'll keep you posted on my plans with LTers while I'm in the capital, in case you have time and would be interested in joining us. I imagine that these would be individual get togethers rather than group meet ups, although it's possible that Fliss (flissp), Rachael (FlossieT), Jenny (lunacat) and I could meet in Cambridge as we did two years ago. Let me know if you'd like to meet up in London for a day, as well.

38TimSharrock
mayo 24, 2013, 8:53 am

and unfortunately I cannot make the 20th either... attending a Classicist's wedding I was unaware of. Sunday 21st afternoon would be possible, though I am busy in the morning, I am away on 22nd as well, but will be around for the rest of _Zoe_'s stay

39_Zoe_
Editado: mayo 24, 2013, 8:55 am

>37 kidzdoc: I think it's unlikely that I'll be able to join you down there, since Sunday the 28th is the only day that I have fully free, but you never know! I'd certainly like to hear your plans in any case.

Hmm, what was the reason for preferring Saturdays to Sundays? Would the afternoon of Sunday the 21st work for anyone else?

41reading_fox

I think I'm around all that weekend.

42TimSharrock

40> I suggested Saturdays, as they are usally better for me ... just not this time, as it turns out

43TimSharrock
Jul 16, 2013, 4:50 pm

Diaries are just too complicated.... the afternoon of Sunday 21st is still possible for me (between an Oxford trip on the Saturday, a London trip on the Monday, and possible Cambridge on the Tuesday!)

44_Zoe_
Jul 17, 2013, 6:05 pm

I can do that afternoon as well. I still haven't remotely gotten around to figuring out my schedule for Manchester (first I need to finish with my current trip to Ghent), but I'm getting into town on Saturday around noon, and the only thing I need to do on Sunday is find a place where I can print out my talk. I'm hoping someone more familiar with the area can just tell me where to be at what time.

45_Zoe_
Jul 20, 2013, 9:56 am

I'm also free next Sunday, which might be more realistic at this point....

46TimSharrock
Jul 20, 2013, 7:46 pm

Indeed - sorry _Zoe_, we northern british seem somewhat disorganised! I will check, and all being well be in touch again for next Sunday.

Enjoy your conference!
