Some of my favoriites are

Feodor Rojandovsky
Maud and Miska Petersham
Hilda van Stockum
P. Yershov
John Burningham
Nancy Elkholm Burkert
Jean de Brunhoff

Burkert's Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs which is NOT the one which popped up in the touchstones(!!) is the first book I bought, new, as a teenager, simply because the illustrations were so beautiful. I loved the Babar books as a child, and the handwritten text which went with the pictures. I still love Babar.

Ooops, I meant

Feodor Rojankovsky

and

Nancy Ekholm Burkert

I spelled them wrong, and so they didn't pop up in the touchstones at first.

Lovely! I hadn't remembered her until I scrolled down and saw the Cotonnet books. Thanks for the link!

I'm also a big Gorey fan.

I also enjoy the illustrators Dulac, Clarke, Rackham and Nielsen (found out about him yesterday and was floored!).

More recent illustrator favorites include Gennadii Spirin and Nancy Elkholm Burkert and, dare I include him, Yoshitaka Amano.

Now, although Amano has worked on anime, I have to protest that he is indeed a highly skilled illustrator whose works would be very hard to define as "anime". They are not cell-shaded sparkly pictures, but actually rather graceful, bold and extremely delicate. They are of course, stylized, but no more (and probably less) stylized than Kay Nielsen's work. Amano illustrated Neil Gaiman's "Sandman: The Dream Hunters". If you would like to be able to "search inside" a book of his artwork, "Fairies" is available on Amazon. I suggest using the side arrows and the "Surprise me!" link to explore in the book.

A couple children's illustrators that come to mind are Robin James (for the Serendipity books by Stephen Cosgrove )--her pics are so bright and beautiful--and Stephen Gammell (for the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series by Alvin Schwartz )--his are just the opposite of Robin's: they're mostly creepy and black-and-white.

I'll vote right down the line with Aluvalibri - but Pogany first (at least for overall book design,) then Rackham and Flint. OK, I'd change Roy Krenkel for Beerbohm and add J.C. Coll and Franklin Booth and . . . it seems there's no end of wonderful illustrators - and a lot of new talent doing beautiful work.

I agree Amano is interesting and skilled - go look at Jim Vadeboncouer's bpib.com site if you want a capsule view of lots of great illustrators (and check his IMAGES volumes while you're there (simply gorgeous!)

Maxfield Parish
N.C. Wyeth
Kinuko Craft
Alex Ross

I also like the Pre-Raphaelite painters.

Alex Ross might not fit in as an illustrator, but his realist watercolor paintings bring comic book superheroes to life.

I agree Edward Gorey. I also love Shaun Tan and Chris Van Allsburg. Alessandro Gottardo and Lisbeth Zwerger are wonderful.

I really enjoyed reading everyone's favorites. I looked up many of them and the illustrations are truly beautiful.
