Hi All,

I've been trying to pickup this collection but have a question I've come across.

Did the entire printed series read Franklin Library of Pulitzer Prize Classics on one of the opening pages? I've picked up about 80% of the actual titles on eBay for about $15.00 each. But going through them I've noticed about 1/2 of the titles I picked up don't list the name of the series.

They do read a Limited Edition available exclusively to subscribers and do have consistent headers on the title page that read 'Pulitzer Prize 19XX'.

I have noticed that most of Limited Editions feel a bit more quality but not all of them. A different printing?

Anyone own the entire series and do all of them list Pulitzer Prize Classics?

Andy

>1 boddhidharma:: Quoting Tom41 from a post in another thread,

"There were ... two Pulitzer Prize sets. One consists of all the fiction winners from 1918 to 1979. This is the better quality set of the two and is distinguished by the moire endleaves. On the title page it says "Pulitzer Prize 19xx". The other set, The Franklin Library of Pulitzer Prize Classics, includes history, drama, biography, etc. as well as duplicates of many of the fiction winners from the other set. The endleaves are marble paper and the title page says "The Pulitzer Prize for XXXXXX 19xx"."

>2 wailofatail: I'm having trouble finding the separate sets on any of the sites dedicated to collectible leather books. All I can find is the Pulitzer Prize Classics series. Is there a site you can direct me to that gives a list of the titles in the set that only includes the fiction winners?

I'm trying to figure out which edition of The Age of Innocence was part of the Pulitzer fiction series. I've narrowed it down to a 1976 or a 1984 edition. The 1984 edition is listed on multiple sources as part of the Pulitzer Prize Classics series. I can't seem to find the 1976 edition described anywhere as part of a series. I've found a photo of the title page of the 1976 edition: at the top it says "The Pulitzer Prize 1921" in scripted italics, instead of just "Pulitzer Prize 19XX" (no "The") in regular italics as described above for the Pulitzer fiction series.

There are other editions, as well, but I've ruled all of them out as part of other Franklin Library sets.

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

While I am certainly no expert on the Pulitzer Prize Classics series, owning only a few volumes myself, here is what I do know (mostly from others here on LT). The initial Franklin Library series, Pulitzer Prize Classics was published from 1975 to 1980. These (I think) featured moire silk endpapers and tend to have a higher quality of leather binding. Each of these volumes had the year printed on the title page as you describe in your example (The Pulitzer Prize 1921). So the 1976 edition of Age of Innocence is from that series, and I believe features purple leather (making this a particular collectible edition...though sadly I do not own it yet). Here is a link to a list of the titles, though there is no indication in this list what year Franklin Library published each title. I do not believe they went in Prize winning year order, but perhaps they did.

http://www.leather-bound-books.net/52/fraklin-library-pulitzer-prize-classics/

Then, and here is where my knowledge gets more sketchy, Franklin issued another Pulitzer Prize series (not sure what exactly it was called to distinguish it from the first). Some of the titles were re-published, but mostly this was a different list of books. I know for certain The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Age of Innocence were re-published. This series is made with noticeably inferior leather (it almost seems leatherette in most copies I've seen), typical of the post 1982 era of Franklin Library. The endpages of these titles were a faux marbled paper. So the endpages is my primary means of distinguishing between the two series, absent a better list of complete titles in each series, which I have yet to locate.

My advice would be to purchase the 1976 version which should be the higher quality copy.

Good luck!

>7 UK_History_Fan: Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it.

I did find the Leather Bound Books link you posted while conducting my research. It's too bad it doesn't list years of publication; without that, it's not very helpful in distinguishing among titles with multiple FL editions. The part I find most confusing, though, is that "Pulitzer Prize Classics," the series name used in that link, is the same series name used on other sources for the later Pulitzer series not exclusive to fiction.

Here's the only source I can find that includes years of of publication:

http://www.leatherboundtreasure.com/pulitzer_prize_classics.html

This is clearly the later series since it includes nonfiction titles; however, many of the titles are published between the 1975 and 1980 dates you mentioned for the fiction-only series. There is an odd gap from 1980-1983, and there seems to be a definite shift away from fiction in the titles after 1980. This leads me to wonder: is it possible that the two series are actually one and the same, with the later series simply adding additional nonfiction titles along with a few re-releases of the more popular fiction titles? I.e., perhaps FL first published the smaller set of fiction winners, then later added nonfiction titles and repackaged them together with the earlier set as one larger, more comprehensive Pulitzer set.

My own partial collection seems to support this thesis: the publication years all match those given in that link, yet all of mine also have the moire endpapers said to be indicative of the earlier set. Additionally, many of my titles only yield a single edition in searches; were the two sets wholly independent of one another, one would have to find at least two editions of all the fiction titles in the earlier set.

The leatherboundtreasure.com link you shared is helpful, but not entirely accurate I believe.

I have recently picked up several of the 'Pulitzer Prize 19XX' books from the 1970's. The Fixer, with moire silk endpapers and ribbon is copyright 1978, rather than the 1986 as listed in the above link.

Both links posted are helpful though. Thank you.

The Pulitzer Prize series has books that will nicely supplement my EP Great Books of the 20th century set of books. I do not plan on collecting the entire series, but rather those books that appeal to my taste in literature. My first books in the series, acquired this week, are here:

A Bell for Adano, while a Pulitzer published by FL, does not contain the 'Pulitzer Prize 19XX' title page, as I opted for the 1978 signed version instead -- which was just cheap.

Do any LT members have brochures from these series in the 70's?

I have added six more of this Franklin Library series to my collection. This brings my total up to 22. I expect I'll keep going when they come up for decent prices, which seems to happen in estate sales. Ah well, I guess I'll pass in 25 years, and another person interested in the 20th century Pulitzers will get a deal.

Mine seem to be well produced volumes, all dated 1975 through 1979.

I was elated to find three volumes of this set in good to very good condition at a local thrift store for ~$10 each. I also found the production quality to be very high and often find myself wishing that Franklin Library was still alive and well.

Feel free to bequeath your collection in 25 years to your favor LT member :)

That sounds like a great library. Thank for the tip on Killer Angels. Do you know the total number of books in this series?
