Hard Spell was a lot of fun. It’s an urban fantasy crime, we follow a police detective Stan Markowski, a member of the Occult and Supernatural Crimes Investigation Unit. They investigate all crimes by the supernatural or against them. We meet Stan and his partner as they are trying to negotiate a hostage situation. A couple goblins high on Meth are holding a convenience store clerk and a customer. It’s a rather unique negotiating technique.

Later the story actually starts when Stan gets called to a murder. The victim appears to be, or had been a wizard. He was tortured rather gruesomely, for the location of his safe and then put to death. Turns out what he was guarding was a magical book worth fearing. Shortly after that vampires start turning up dead, with strange symbols carved in them. The book could cause end of the world type trouble and Stan and his partner get to try and prevent the Apocalypse.

Overall, I found this book to be great fun. It’s hard crime but with the supernatural and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There was a bit of humor and a lot of action. The main character was fairly decently drawn and the story flowed well. I thought it was a good book and eagerly await the next in the series.

Good review. Just one small thing. In the second paragraph it seems like it should be vampires "start" turning up dead rather than started just so the tenses agree.

I just read this book too and it was a really fun read. I especially liked the tongue in cheek references to everything from Dragnet to The Usual Suspects.

It is quiet here! I'd sort of slacked off regularly checking in to the group.

Here's a couple of things:

1st paragraph, 2nd sentence: I think it should be ...an urban fantasy crime novel. Right now it feels like an incomplete statement.

Also, that second sentence could be split there, with a period instead of a comma.

1st paragraph, 5th sentence: Should that be A couple of goblins...? I know sometimes people leave the 'of' out, so if you did that for style, just label me dense.

2nd paragraph, 1st sentence: I think you should swap the positions of 'story' and 'actually'. Later the actual story starts...

2nd paragraph, last sentence: ...Stan and his partner get to try... I would suggest using a stonger word than 'get'. That makes it sound optional or unimportant.

The book sounds fun. I think I might check it out.

Have you read the sorta similarly themed Monster Hunter International?
