I've been a lifelong fan of both characters, and I can't help but think Batman was at least in part inspired by Holmes. Both men are widely trained in various sciences including criminology and fighting, among other things. The main differences, as far as I can tell, are the fact that, though Holmes is a master of disguise, he doesn't go around in costume all the time, and Wayne doesn't posses quite the insanely high level of visual detection skills Holmes utilities on a regular basis. Maybe being a fan of both is biasing me, and I'm seeing something thats not there, but its certainly possible.

Holmes doesn't have Wayne's budget, either.

There's a panel from a comic several decades back of Holmes and Batman perusing the same clues, some sort of metaphorical description of Batman that I don't know the context of. So you're not the first to see the parallel.

I would be surprised if I was! Not sure how to post it here, but I found a rather amusing comic recently wherein Holmes walks up to Wayne dressed as Batman, inspects him for a couple panels, smoking his pipe, declares "Bruce Wayne," and is promptly strung up by his heels by the caped crusader in the last panel, in which he mutters "sensitive fellow."

DC did a Holmes tie-in in a special edition Batman comic:

In the past decade Wayne was also presented as a student of The Shadow, and while a teenager, as an assistant to Hercule Poirot.
