New biography of Fred's mater, Mary Benson

I wondered if the group might be interested in a new biography of Fred's extraordinary mother, Mary. Atlantic Books has just published "As Good as God, As Clever as the Devil The Impossible Life of Mary Benson" by Rodney Bolt. I hope it may cast more than a little light on some of the formative influences of our favourite Mayor of Rye.

Thanks for posting this, BusyIndoors. I have only a vague idea of the outline of Fred's father's life and who his siblings were, and I must confess that I had no idea that his mother was something of a celebrity on the social scene. This certainly looks like a good read.

I haven't got the book yet, but there's a favourable review in this month's "Literary Review" (the Literary Review website, unfortunately, is still showing the June issue).

Just got this in the mail - looks interesting. What lives those Bensons led!

I have received my copy too: a very absorbing and entertaining read. You do have to admire Mary, a unique woman. How unlike the home-life of our own dear Queen! I do hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
