Origin swapping time! I hate to admit it, but the thing that made me start writing on my own is fanfiction. Anime and manga fanfiction, no less. And to this day, between my own projects, I still post stuff (it's my most guilty of pleasues).

I know, I'm a dork :P

So what about the rest of you?

I used to write fanfiction a lot too-- it's definitely not a bad thing. I hear that publishers now look online to see which young writers have lots of people reading their fanfictions...one step closer to getting published!

For me writing started when I realised that in a few years time, I might not be able to remember the wonderful ideas I had created. Writing for me is a way to preserve ideas first, then a way to get published and make money.

The thing that actually started me making stories was going online, finding books I knew I would never read, learning as much as I could about the plot and characters, and coming up with my own version of the same story. I still do it all the time, as it helps me come up with the ability to build worlds and peoples that I hope are realistic.

my writing actually started when i was really young. i used to make up a story with my dad, before i could even write it down. now, i'm planning on turning it into a children's book. then i picked writing back up when i was around ten and started writing plays. then...it progressed to fan fiction and now, my novels!

I started out by just being bored. One day I was bored and this thought popped into my head and I actually did it and It was fun. I had my friends and family read it and then....POOF!

I just have a natural book writing talent. It doesn't help that my family is really creative in almost anything you give them and I grew up around my two uncles who are married and English majors.

In the third grade I didn't really like reading. That is, until my sister told me to read Tamora Pierce's Song of The Lioness quartet. After reading them I was completely hooked. I read all her books in under a year and eventually I needed new material, so I tried reading other books and they just didn't live up to my expectations. There were a few that came close but every time the writer had the chance to add a twist that would make it that much better they chose to keep it predictable*. So I started writing down what I thought should have happened at those points and redirecting them to the original story line but with a few changes. And those spin offs just kept piling up so I decided to combine them. Of course some just didn't work together but the ones that went with each other extremely well became a short story for my English class. Since then I've been writing novels of all different shapes and sizes.

*All except for M.L. Forman. His books are the only ones i can't think of a spin off for. I have a few idea's for another adventure, but not a single spin off for the books already published.
