Welcome to the game of "Go Review That Book!" I hope some find it fun. I hope somebody finds it and chooses me a book, else I'll continue to be completely reviewless.

Books take longer to read than tracks/albums so this might not be as sucessful. It will certainly be slower.

Invite a few people - groups are seldom noticed by drive-by users on talk. There are too many!

Are you still reading your catalog alphabetically? Won't this disrupt the process somewhat?

Lots of users catalog book they don't own. I don't know how this will work for them - maybe they'll have to retrieve a copy.

It sounds fun though - I'm currently in a re-reading spell until I hit a bookshop again. I'll probably not want to re-read when I've shiney new books to enjoy but between then its good,

I tried, but I've looked at a dozen or so books in Reading Fox's library but I can't find a book that doesn't have a review.

I was a little confused by that. I wasn't sure if IM meant a book with no review at all or a book not previously reviewed by that person. I did send a message asking about this.

I'm fairly new to LT and have tons of books in my library I've not yet read and none of which I have "officially" reviewed. I'm also not in the middle of reading anything that I can't put down for a bit so I'm game :)

Someone pick one for me. I also don't mind re-reads.

Waterlily, if I understand this correctly, I am supposed to pick one for you to read (or re-read) and review, yes? If so, I'd love to read your review of Emergence by David Palmer. I've already had this recommended to me and would like to learn more.

Thank you, Scorbet :) I was thrilled to see that you had picked The Poyson Garden for me. I have a first edition yet somehow it's managed to stay in my tbr pile all this time.

I now have it in hand and have read the prologue :)

As a side note, I stitched a Tudor rose bookmark two years ago and I plan to pull it out today and complete the finishing touches so I can use it as I read this one.

How about The Dark Tower Vol. 1: The Gunslinger by Stephen King?

I hope that it doesn't suck you into feeling a need to read the whole series. I'd like to read it but I can't commit to the whole thing. As such, I've avoided this one despite the good things I've heard. I'll be interested to hear what you think.

Now having done a quick review of the messages above, it seems that everyone has been assigned a book except Message 6: horsebabe579. Given that message, I'm not sure they're in the right place. So we should be caught up.

Waterlily, thanks for the pick. It's been quite a few years since I read Bourdieu so I will have to read it again before I can write a review that will do it justice. I'm doing two other books for book clubs right now as soon as I finish one I will start on this.

I'm happy to as I've read it many times (it's always good for a laugh). It's more of a spoof book that honors the killer 'do that I sported 20 years ago than a novel or its nonfiction equivalent. Since there isn't much to it, I'm happy to review it upon re-read but I thought I'd give you the opportunity to choose a different one that will require more than an hour to read.

I also hate to see judgments being made on works based on the current pc climate. However, to borrow a phrase from one of Inigo's companions, "Inconceivable!"

#31- I know a few meaning's none of them seem to fit, there's "plum duff" a desert, Homer Simpson's beer, etc, but this is "plenty of prizes and plenty of duff" its not rum or drink because that is grog, sometimes used in the same sentance.

Shortride- I checked out your library and picked one that you haven't starred yet so hopefully that means you haven't read the book yet. My choice for you is Advance and Retreat which actually looks pretty good. I would have never thought to create a story about an alternate civil war turned into a fantasy.

Hi Jenson AKA DL-I looked at your library and your reviews and I'd like to see a review of Uglies by Scott Westerfeld-i'd really like to know what you think of it.

lennnadine- Uglies was actually a book I read for a book group over the winter. I know I have a bunch of reviews already posted which probably makes it hard to find one I haven't already reviewed. I should have mentioned in my last post that the books I own and haven't read are all marked "tbr" in my library. Here is my review of The Poyson Garden by Karen Harper:

"Down wi' the bloody Boleyn's - e'en the royal one!"

Once again out of favour with her half-sister, Bloody Mary Tudor, Princess Elizabeth has been exiled to Hatfield House. While the estate may be less confining than the Tower of London, it may not prove to be safer. While there, Elizabeth finds herself among those targeted by unknown forces determined to rid the realm of the Boleyns.

With the help of her beloved maid, Kat Ashley, and groom, Stephen Jenks, Elizabeth is determined to get to the bottom of the conspiracy, one that may reach to the very highest level of the monarchy.

While I found the prose a bit slow going in the early pages, the pace soon picked up and the prose smoothed out making me glad I continued to read. Several plot twists kept the story interesting and although the story was more plot driven, I found the characters well drawn and believable.

I've added the other books in the series to my wishlist and look forward to reading the future exploits of Elizabeth I.

For Leennnadine, I'd like a review of As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.

I'm very excited to get my first book chosen for me. As I enter my books, one by one, I keep thinking how I want to read or reread them. My request is that it not be one that was read in the last 4 years, which is noted in comments.

I've posted my review for Countess Confidential. I'm going to have to put my participation on hold for hte moment as well. I have exams for the next two weeks and then I'm off to Europe for a summer job. Sadly I won't be able to take my books with me.

I'll be back in a few months.

My many so-called reviews are mostly 2 lines of notes I took in years past, so you could safely ignore any of them.

Got it, reading fox. Not what I was expecting, but a fun assignment, involving a trip to an Asian grocery store and cooking an Asian meal. I'm smiling at the prospect.

Sorry I've been a bit slow on reading my assigned books. I was finishing one that was already underway (Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods : Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail in case you're interested in reading that review also). Today, I completed The Mullet: Hairstyle of the Gods and I'll begin reading Magic Seeds this evening.

Sorcerer's Legacy by Janny Wurts is read and reviewed

Thank's for picking this Jenson, I've not re-read it before, the opening chapters are very similar to a short story I've read elsewhere, which I profoundly didn't like. Subsiquently and foolishly I've been put off Legacy thinking it was the same book. It isn't, its great.

For MarySargent I'm giong to pick Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut which I know nothing about except that the author recently died.

Perfect, Reading Fox. I read a lot of Vonnegut in the 70's and really liked him, and since he died I've had it in mind to re-read. I'm wondering if I'll still like him as much.

I've just jumped onto a new book, This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession by Daniel Levitin, but I'd welcome a new selection (to be read next). My Family and Other Animals is read and reviewed. Great choice Jenson. I've read it a few times, but not for many years and forgotten just how delightful it is. I'm not in school so no assigned reading for me, and it is unlikely they'd ever have chosen this, but I'd have been thrilled if they had. Made famous by it's telvisation, the book is excellant and much better than any dramatacisation could ever be. Apparently all true too.

For you I choose : Well its hard you've got a wide range of Tbr's, Storm Front is great and you should read it, A brief history of Time is different and would make a change of pace, but I'm going to settle for The Losers a contemporary novel by one fo the stalwarts of fantasy. I enjoyed this much more than his genre stuff, and I'm curious as to what others make of it.

For those picking for me it doesn't have to be a book without ratings, just not something I've tagged 2007.

This is a friggin' great idea. I'm ready for anyone's best shot. Although, I have to admit I'm a little scared on the choice seeing as though my girlfriend's books are all mixed in my own catalog. But...I'll try anything once.

Welcome, NielsenGW! To start out, you should choose a book for the last person who has read and reviewed and needs a new book. That would be reading fox. Then you have to wait, sometimes for a while, until the next person posts a review and chooses for you. (Or the next new member joins in.)

If you want to limit the scariness factor, you can specify a group of books to choose from. If you read the last few posts, you can see how people have done that. (But maybe you SHOULD read one of your girlfriend's books!)

Alrighty then -- the game's afoot! For reading_fox, I choose The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy. I had a seminar in Hardy in college and am eager to hear your review.

I like this idea, because, you know, I don't have enough to do already. I see NielsenGW has a copy of Necessary Angel by Wallace Stevens. It's an interesting little book (and short!), so I choose that for you. Unless it is one of your girlfriend's books, in which case I'll choose something else if you like.

I've finished my most recent GRTB book, The Losers by David Eddings. It was a bit of an unusual experience, I've never disagreed so vehemently with a POV and still admired the actual writing style of a book quite so much.

booklady - I think I'm choosing for you next. I noticed you have The Crystal Cave in your library. I've been thinking about buying this book for my 16 year old son and would love to hear your thoughts on the story.

Now for my traditional disclaimer. Whosoever is to pick for me, choose a book marked with TBR if you please.

I'm sure with the prolonged downtime we'll all have made good progress on our various books! I've read and reviewed The Mayor of Casterbridge . About as I remembered it, very good if you liek that sort of thing, but even if you don't worth reading.

Jensen - looks like we disagree on The Losers. I admit if you were expecting fantasy it is a bit of a shock. Whilst exagerated, I've found the attitudes cast for the social care workers not to be too far off the mark.
I'll try something more traditionally fantasy for you this time Storm Front, which I enjoyed - don't get hooked and read the other 9 in the series, we want to see you back in here!

I've read and reviewed Storm Front. I can see why people get hooked on this series. I really enjoyed the story!

Reading_Fox - How about Stupid White Men by Michael Moore? I've neither read any books by him nor watched movies by him but have always been passingly curious about his work.

I just wanted to say (again) that I'm really enjoying this! My "tbr" pile consists of many experimental books for me because I'm trying to branch out into different themes and genres. So, even when I don't love a particular book I still get the satisfaction of knowing I've read it and checking it off of my list. That's what makes this particular group such a wonderful thing for me!

Is anybody else still playing except Jenson and I? I hope the big 'crash' didn't scare anyone away?

Oh well, Jenson and I shall play together nicely. When you've finished the Harry Dresdens how about Fang and Fur, Blood and Bone: A Primal Guide to Animal Magic by our own LT author Lupabitch This should be interesting as it is a non-fictional account vaguely similar to some of Harry's exploits, and is an area I know nothing about. I'm curious to know what it's like.

Believe it or not, I am STILL reading Pierre Bourdieu for waterlily #8 and intend to continue when I finish.

I am reading The Crystal Cave for Jenson_AKA_DL...still a few days away from reviewing it though.

I'm still playing - I just have to write the damn review. Any day now. It's for Gorillas in the Mist.

I'm still in. I'm about half way through Lolita. I got sidetracked with my new Wii and a couple of other books (which I've already reviewed). I should get through it over the weekend.

I would like to play, but it looks like there is alot of conversations going on so I don't know who to ask to review a book.

All right, let me be brief and get this over with. The trouble I've had getting this book review done Gorillas in the Mist by Dian Fossey must be coming from my antipathy to it, which, I take it, is not a common reaction. So don't be discouraged by my negativity. I'm posting it here since I won't be keeping the book.

You probably know about Dian Fossey, who went to Africa to observe mountain gorillas, a dwindling species beset upon by poachers and environmental encroachments. She was there 13 years, published the book in 1983, and was murdered in 1985 most likely by poachers.

Although I like books about animal behavior and expected to like this one, I ended up not finishing the last 12 pages. At the beginning, it was hard to get into because she's just not a very good writer. Sentimental, stilted, unoriginal language, e.g., "Wherever he needs to wander in the perpetuation of his species, it is my fervent hope that Tiger may succeed to form and lead a gorilla family just as other lone silverbacks have before him."

Then interest in the material took over. But by the end, it started feeling kind of creepy to me. I'm interested in obsession, but this obsession bothered me. Probably because she's writing it herself and she seems very naïve about herself. If I read something written about her by a writer who was more objective, I might have liked it more.

Okay bookwormteri, you're a funny one to pick for since you've read everything in your catalog. Thinking you will be rereading, I took care to pick a 5-star book. Please review The Piano: A Novel by Jane Campion. I like her as a filmmaker and didn't know she wrote as well.

The Piano is an absolutely breathtaking work. Lucky for me I read it not too long ago, but here goes...

Ada moves to New Zealand as a mail order bride and finds that she has no love for her husband or his country. Instead she finds herself strangely attracted to her "grotesque" neighbor. Heartbreaking and beautiful I was really surprised to enjoy this. I don't know why but for some reason I thought it would be drab and dull, but I could not put it down. The strange land, the compelling characters, it was just a great read. I guess I will have to see the movie at some point now.

bookwormteri, I am a new member of the group and am jumping onto this thread to request that you review a mystery from your library: Dead Men Don't Lye by Tim Myers.

It's intriguing that our libraries show no shared books, but you have a lot of mysteries plotted against niche backgrounds that I'd love to read (arts & crafts, cooking and gardening especially).

I am at a standstill cataloguing my books for the time being, owing to their allergic (oops, allergenic) dust, and hope this group will be an actuator for writing reviews.

The Novice is read an reviewed - BUT be warned as the second part of a trilogy this contains Spoilers from the first book The Magicians Guild so only read the Novice review once you've read the first part.

Marchpane: how about a review of Those idiots from earth which sounds like it might be fun.

I have posted my review of Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler, but it replaced a one-liner I posted on April 17 so it's one review down. I first read it in 1989 and it was interesting to see that I didn't think as much of it this time.

Now for reading fox: would you please review Kissing the Gunner's Daughter by Ruth Rendell? I've never read her.

I've reviewed Kissing the Gunner's daughter - Not Ruth Rendall's finest work, as you can tell. Her Inspecter Wexford is similar to P.D. James's Inspecter Dalgleesh, but he is much better written. Inspecter Wexford mysteries made a fairly reasonable TV series as such things go, so I don't know if it was just this book, or that the details were so thin that they made good TV and poor reading. I might try another of hers at some stage, because they do have a fairly good reputation.

MarySeargent - try Guns, germs and Steel I think this is one of those popular science / sociology books that I sometimes like, and sometimes don't so I'd be interested in whether it is worthwhile.

Reading Fox, you take my breath away. That book hadn't been catalogued but half a day when you picked it for me! I scooped it up last night from my building's laundry room giveaway shelf. I'll start it as soon as I finish with a couple of little things. Thank you.

I just discovered this group and think it's a really neat idea. And I'm excited about the thought of not having to perform the arduous task of deciding on a book myself.

Mary, I'd love to see what you think of Nabokov's Pale Fire. It's been recommended to me countless times.

The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime has been read and another review added to the huge stack already on LT.

Adamallan try Oak-Mot just because it's such an unusual title.

Thanks elbakerone. I'm excited by the prospect of reading The Cave. Jose Saramago is one of my favorite authors and this is one of the few (more recent) books by him that I've not read. Hey, all. I've been working on my review for The Taint of Lovecraft. This is actually a book I've been wanting to review for a while but could never quite get a handle on. So having it assigned on this list was a great inspiration for me to try to face it head on.

I'm still finding it challenging, because Stanley isn't just doing the same thing over and over in his stories. So, I hope this isn't cheating but I've decided to review this book in parts on my blog before sitting down and writing an overall review (which I'll post on LibraryThing). Anyone wanting to check out what I've got done so far can go here. (Feedback is welcome.)

I read in English, French and Spanish fluently. I speak Japanese as well but can't read novels yet. Someday I hope! And sorry that all my books are in different languages, I know that probably made choosing one difficult. Although, quite a few of them have English translations as well so if you were to recognize the author, you could click on social and see the English title.

Island of the Sequined Love Nun is such a weird book that I don't really know how to review it. I've thought for two days and only come up with three sentences:

"This is an interesting take on how religions get started, masquerading as a wild, funny story of sex and crime in the Western Pacific. Or vice versa. Looking back, this seems like a practice run for Moore's later, and better, 'Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal.'" (3 1/2 stars)

I may revise that later.

In general, Dorothy L. Sayers is great, and I can't recommend most of her mysteries highly enough. The novel Murder Must Advertise or the short-story collection Lord Peter: A Collection are good places to start.

I just finished Night. Elie Wiesel completely amazed me. My review is here. I think I'm still in shock from reading it but thank you lilsin for picking it for me. If you're thinking of reading it, definitely do. It's very sad but very powerful. And I think it would be worth reading in the original French. Let me know what you think if you do get around to it.

When I was picking for you I checked out the reviews previously and figured you couldn't go wrong with that one. :) Unfortunatey I forgot to check my parent's library for the book before I moved so I'll have to wait to go back over Thanksgiving and see if I can't find it. Don't want doubles and no sense me reading it in English. XD

I'm still on my book so don't choose for me quite yet. While moving though, I did get to finish After the Quake by Haruki Murakami and will have to post a review soon. I have been without internet for a week and half so it has been hard to keep in touch.

Yes, I realize it took me a while, but I am so freaking excited about finishing an 800 page book. I usually prefer the 200-300 pagers.

My review for Sangre y Arena is complete. I was glad to read that. I'd kind of written off early 20th Century Spanish fiction as boring. But that was a book that told a simple story but told it well, and managed to be thought provoking without being heavy-handed.

I finished Fishboy and have posted a review. I actually had read this one back in high school and hadn't enjoyed it. This time, I thought it was great, really digging the language and structure of the story. I will say if you don't like dark and disturbing, you may wish to avoid it.

Caramellunacy I've finished and reviewed Inca Gold - I've not re-read any cussler for a lonog time. It was just as I'd remembered, pure fluff. Certainly entertaining, enjoyable, action oriented fluff, but never in contension for the Literature Nobel.

I'm curious that you started on Inca Gold - I pretty much abandoned Cussler here, he'd got too repetative, too unbelivable and too long. A quick check on Wiki shows I thought I'd read most of his work, but in fact I've managed less than half..

Death by Suburb is read and reviewed. It was a quicker read than I expected and pretty good too. The review is here.

Welcome to the game nancy... Oh man, this might be my hardest choice yet... we have pretty similar libraries. I'm tempted to ask for your review of Death in Belmont cause that's on my TBR list too.... or something in your Christianity tags.... toomany good choices! I'll go a little offbeat here and ask you to review Mallory's Oracle. I'm a pretty big Carol O'Connell fan and I read that book years ago. I love a lot of the ones that come after it but I don't remember that one too well. Let me know what you think of it and if you like O'Connell's style. If you enjoy that one I'd recommend reading her whole series.

Is it controversal? any good? A command or a guide?

Hello all! I just discovered this little group and I'm quite thrilled by the idea of it.

reading_fox - I wasn't sure if you had a preferred group, but I'm interested in seeing a review of The Constant Gardener. It looks like you've rated it but not reviewed. I loved the movie and the book is one of my many unreads, so I'd like to read what you thought of it.

For whoever chooses for me, my to-be-reads are marked with an unread tag, but don't feel limited to those. However, a small minority of my collection resides in Denver at the moment and I do not, so if you pick one of those I might ask for an alternate. (I might work on getting those tagged so as not to have this problem in the future...)

That one is in Denver, but until I get all the Denver books tagged, it's going to be difficult to discern what to pick. Luckily, the public library (which is just across the street) has a copy so I'll just check it out from there.

So how about Tex and Molly in the Afterlife by Richard Grant.

I've had that book sitting on my shelf for years but nothing has ever compelled me to actually pick it up and read it. I'd love to read a review on it to get a better idea of what it is about.

Elbakerone - We do have similar tastes! I began Mallory's Oracle the other night but set it aside to read my Early Review book. I have read so many recommendations for it from LT mystery lovers.

Danielle - Congratulations on your marriage and honeymoon! Please read The Other Boleyn Girl. I mooched it recently and probably won't be getting to it for a while. Historical romantic fiction is not a genre I'm very familiar with, and it seems like something you love so I'm eager to get your take on this one.

As for whoever chooses for me, well, this is where it gets interesting. Really, you can choose whatever book you'd like that doesn't already have a review but if you need to narrow it down the tbr pile is marked with the tag "unread." (However, depending on where I am when you choose and where the book is there might be a delay before I get to its physical location, but not more than a week either way.)

zmrzlina--we live in the same city so I'll ask you to read Women of Troy Hill. I grew up in Spring Garden which is right next door to Troy Hill. I know some of the women featured in the book which might have influenced me in loving this book. I was particularly taken with the author's concept of "neighboring". I hope you enjoy it.
