Hi there!
I have a few book 'collections' and I am not sure whether to split them up across the DDC/MDC or whether to keep them together in a higher order (if that is possible). The collections are likely to be known to Aussies so I am asking your thoughts. What would you do?
The collections are:
Student's World
Child Craft
How My Body Works
Thanks for your advice in advance!

DCC/MDC?
I googled it and came up with a whole lot of Roman numerals.
Sorry - can you be a bit more specific. My answer would be that if you want to keep them then do so and if you don't then give them to the Save the Children Fund or some other worthy charity.

Dewey Decimal System/ Melvil Decimal System. My daughter had some of the "How My Body Works" series, so I think I know what you are getting at.
Are asking whether you should split up the collection in your physical library or your virtual "library thing" library. I certainly would not split up the collection in a physical (home) library. What you do in your virtual library is a matter for you. Personally I would use tags to keep such collections "intact", rather than a higher order number in the DDC/MDC field. The number which is in that field can be edited if you want.
As I understand it the Dewey system was developed to make it easier to find, and, to later reshelve returned books in large public or institutional libraries. Apart from historical interest I cannot see it being a particularly useful tool for home libraries and virtual libraries. Interested to know if others disagree

SimB - Thank you for your thoughts. At this stage I have done maybe 20% of my library and it is large enough for me to need to catalogue it in a serious way (so that I can find things because categories are just not good enough any more).
I figure that the How My Body Works books will fall neatly into either 570 or 573. I am lost as to what to do with the Childcraft or Students World titles though.
