I recently discovered the short fiction of Sherman Alexie, a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian who has created a number of characters who share his passion for books, basketball, or both. Maybe his best known title is The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, currently at the top of my TBR pile.

This thread is for touting indigenous writers (from anywhere) whose work you've read and recommend. Fiction only, please.

William Sanders is a native American science fiction writer. His story "The Undiscovered" is one of my favorites.

Talking Leaves is a anthology of short fiction by native Americans.

House Made of Dawn is in my To-Be-Read pile. It has a good reputation, but my wife found it tough sledding. Has anyone on the list read it?

House Made of Dawn was required reading for an American Indian Literature course I took as an elective for my bachelor's degree. I remember it as being somewhat depressing with flashes of imagination, if that makes sense. Much later when I read the sci-fi fantasy book Eye of Cat by Roger Zelazny I sensed similarities in the stream-of-consciousness material of the two. HMD is not a book I would read again, and I have totally forgotten the plot, but it was valuable as a first educated look into Native American experience. It's odd that I ended up specializing in political issues of indigenous peoples much later in grad school.
