THE EDUCATION HENRY ADAMS (1917)
Henry Adams has been described as a 'Boston Brahman'; grandson of President John Q. Adams-with whom he lived in his youth-and great-grandson of President John Adams, Henry was Bright, Sensitive, Insightful, Wise and, unfortunately for us, viewed his life 'through a Glass Darkly' as a lifelong victim of Melancholia. Still, he was familiar with many of the most influential figures of nineteenth century America due to his social rank as a descendant of U.S. Presidents.
As a student of the 'War for Southern Independence', I was interested to learn about the major diplomatic success that his father achieved in preventing the British Empire from recognizing and supporting the Confederate States of America in their struggle for independence.
This work is considered by many to be the finest work of Non-Fiction, in English, of the Twentieth Century. However, this does not make it an easy read, by any means. It is the kind of autobiography that is intended more for study than amusement.
MARTHA WASHINGTON, an American Life (2005) by Patricia Brady
The work reminds us of the old Saying "The Past is a Foreign Country, they do things Differently there". Life in Eighteenth Century America was quite different from now and this book is a exploration of domestic life amongst the land owning classes.
Some people wonder why Martha had no children with George, even though she had two by a previous marriage. George survived an attack of Smallpox in his teen years, and since one of the many complications of this is sterility, it is believed that he was simply unable to give her children.
