Hi all,

I am the proud owner of a lovely English cocker spaniel (a red one), and I was thinking if there are any books (fiction) that features this breed?

Thanks in advance!

There's a somewhat fictionalized biography of Flush, by Virginia Woolf, which is about Elizabeth Barrett Browning's dog.

There should be a whole genre dedicated to them. Since becoming a proud cocker owner (golden), I've come to the conclusion that EBB wouldn't have been able to sneak out of her house if Flush was a solidly built as my Ralphy. I need a crane to lift him. I can't think of any other fictional cockers but I'm keeping a look out.

Outlaw is half-cocker, (his mom) but I haven't read any specific cocker spaniel books..

There's an ex-spaniel (breed not specified) briefly referred to in The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. Dogs don't fare overly well in this book.

You must read Champion Dog, Prince Tom by Jean Fritz. Although this is a children's book and very old, it is a lovely tale of a fantastic Cocker. My husband read it aloud on a car trip (back before audio books!) to my and our two daughters 15 years ago. We still talk about Prince Tom. I don't know where you might find it--I just bought a second copy at a used book sale....that's how special it is (each daughter wants their own copy).

Thanks so much for the tips! Champion dog seems a nice read, so might try that one :).

#5 Just to add to Kirsty's comment, very few dogs fare well in fiction. In fact, it's frequently a sign to me these days that if there is a dog in a book I should think very carefully abut whether to continue because if anything horrible is going to happen than it's going to start by happening to the dog. I know some of us have discussed this at length elsewhere on LT so I don't want to labour the point but my advice to sopies_choice would be to approach with caution. Good luck.
