I've changed the group image. The gauntlet has been thrown.

Except that no self respecting Australian would be caught dead drinking Fosters :)

We export that crap because the locals won't drink it!

So John keeps telling me. Nobody's changed the picture yet, though...

Googled "Australian library" and chose the first best picture that came up. No idea which library it is.

Looks like the reading room at the State Library of Victoria.

Hopefully we can find other better pictures than "Fosters" to represent this group. Thanks wookiebender.

An Australian book pile would be good. Iconic books might be:

For the Term of His Natural Life
Voss
Cloudstreet
The Tyranny of Distance
A Fortunate Life
The Magic Pudding
The Muddleheaded Wombat
The Female Eunuch
Mary Poppins
The Thorn Birds

and I must confess, I don't have many of these in my library - how unpatriotic of me!

I'll work on a bookpile (later on) in the morning.

#5> Thanks!

#6> Hey, not a problem. I wasn't a fan of the Fosters picture either but...

#7 & #8> ... have/had no time to do anything further than a Google search, so thanks rodneyvc for the idea & justjim for working on it!

Mary Poppins is by an Australian author?? You learn a new thing every day.

Added a jar of vegemite. What was there before the Fosters?

10: I don't think there was anything there - I think it was pre-group pictures.

(btw, I think I need my citizenship revoked; I can't stand vegemite: I think it's a cruel joke we play on foreigners)

Damn! I promised a bookpile then, er, misremembered to do it. I'm on the job right now.

Strewth! Look at the pile of books on this group!

I put it up as the primary picture just to show it off, please feel free to set the primary picture to any of our other pictures as is pleases you. Except possibly the Vegemite for Christine's sensibilities.

Don't feel bad, Christine, the Arab world has been doing the same with sheep's eyeballs and the southern Chinese with their 皮蛋 (thousand-year eggs) for longer than Vegemite has been around.

I used to think the Aborigines were playing the same trick with witchetty grubs, but they're actually pretty darn good. Hmm, maybe that's what we need for our group photo - some bush tucker?

*grin* Has anyone except me heard the story of the tour guide, encouraging his group to try wichety grubs but told the group to swallow them head first or they would crawl out again.

Not sure, but I think that the story is on a par with information about drop bears. (try google if you have never heard of drop bears; there is a great deal of helpful information ...)

14: The beauty about drop bears is not only does it work on tourists, but also on quite a few young locals.

Foster's is indeed c##p: fizzy chemical concoction.

If I had the oney I would buy some Aussie whisky like Starward or Heliors Rd but tooooo expensive.

Always on the look out for a deal. Last night, schnaffled a bottle of the lovely Teacher's Scotch blend from DMs for a very decent $29.95 (it has a very high malt content for a blend and has a peaty finish)

>9 wookiebender: Pamela Travers was born in Maryborough. And I once almost convinced a steward on the Rocky Mountaineer train about drop bears while we were watching real bears from the train.

A not bad Australian beer I've grown fond of recently is Coopers Mild Ale. Nice smooth malty taste...
