Here is the current list of top works tagged ULTB and the top Users http://www.librarything.com/tag/ultb
I've just had to remove the tag from another 3 of my books. :(

Pooh, I had to take 7 books out of the category! Still leaves me pretty high up in the listings, though.

So I see, I wish I had 400 odd ULTB's

4staffordcastle
Ene 25, 2011, 6:38 pm

I have a lot of books purchased abroad when I was a kid/teen, and those are old and odd enough to be ULTB. Even though LT has members around the world, it seems that most of them don't have the same interests that I do!

5staffordcastle
Ene 25, 2011, 6:40 pm

My tally is still less than half of the top user of the tag, though.

6setnahkt
Ene 25, 2011, 7:27 pm

I was over 1000 but I check periodically and remove the tag if somebodoy else has entered a duplicate. Many of ULTBs are only "books" by courtesy - I have geologic and topographic maps, DVDs, CDs, etc. in there. My defense is that these are all things you could find in a brick-and-mortar library and therefore it is acceptable to include them in mine.

I must get around to entering my maps, that will boost my numbers a bit.

Yes, thanks - I had been meaning to do it this week, but hadn't gotten to it yet. I think I finally have all the unique ones tagged, though. It's been a long process!

I have two books, the Michelin Red Guides for Great Britain, 1975 and 1984, which have been combined, but which I marked ULTB. I'll probably go and separate them as every Red Guide for Britain from 1975 to present has been combined, and then create a series for them. I did do this for the France Red Guides. The Michelin Green Guides (sightseeing) are combinable, but the Red Guides (hotel and restaurant listings - prices and ratings change every year). I am currently at 564, but I do include maps, and very specialized transportation reports.

I, too, had been thinking of this off and on recently and am glad to have been prodded.

As of two minutes ago all of the one member books in my library are tagged ULTB, and all of my ULTB books are one member books. I distrust some of the data. A forties book of plays went from ULTB to a hundred and some members. My two volumes of Decline of the West (a work touchstone not specific to my two volumes) should not be the only ones, although I suppose abridgments and others could account for that.

I check it every once in a while, but on this prompt I did it again - removed two and added...some, more than two (forgot to keep track). Most of mine are music and cookbooks.

Feb 2, 2011, 11:44 pm

Thanks for the reminder. I removed the ultb tag from about 24 books and added it to at least a dozen. Certain books have gone back and forth - several won the ultbagain tag this time, at least one not for the first time. If I search my own books for the ultb tag it finds all the books I tagged ultbnomore as well, almost 200 of them for a total of 603. The search from the LT tag link on this page finds only the ultb tag - 405. I wonder what the difference is.

What's the benefit of having the tag when it's so easy to see the number anyway? Just curious?

We have 412; no idea where that places us.

18bernsad
Feb 3, 2011, 9:23 pm

There's no real benefit to having the tag other than personal amusement, satisfaction, one-upmanship, IN YOUR FACE...

Oh, sorry, got carried away! No, just for the fun of it really.

19bernsad
Feb 3, 2011, 9:27 pm

If you were to tag yours that would put you in 7th place based on current numbers. Of course that is only amongst the people who tag with ULTB, there are probably hundreds (thousands?) of users who don't tag and have unique books in their collections.

In a world bent on homogenization, it's good to find how you might stand out.

I rescue old books that no one seems to care about anymore. I seem to specialize in old turn of the century health and right living books. They can be examples of "what goes around, comes around" or be hopelessly, but amusingly out of date.

I find it helpful to try to understand what was important to a distant generation.

I just checked mine and had to eliminate less than 20. I then checked the tag page. There are several items tagged ULTB by three members. Obviously, those shouldn't be tagged that way.

26vpfluke
Abr 13, 2011, 10:45 pm

I own the three Michelin Red Guides for Great Britain that were at the top of the list (and are still there until cacheing comes through). They are three separate books that were combined. Michelin Red Guides are like almanacs and are grouped together by means of series. They are technically what librarians call a serial, but LT doesn't really handle serials, so series are the closest thing. I separated a number of the Red Guides apart, and hopefully they won't look like three books marked ULTB.

Just checked, and had to take it off 8 items, one of which must have gotten combined, since it suddenly had 45 owners. Not a big surprise, though, as it was a crochet book. I'm more surprised at some of the 16th century history books acquiring more owners.

30douglas1963
mayo 7, 2011, 2:06 pm

I've only had to remove one of my ULTBs since I discovered this phenomenon. I'm one of two on that one. I just picked up a new ULTB for a buck at a thrift store - a 1967 nature appreciation from Little Brown. It's in decent shape too. Now I need to start scanning in some covers.

31Keeline
mayo 11, 2011, 1:29 pm

I went to the list for the tagged ULTBs and noticed something odd. On the first page of covers is one which I have a green check mark indicating I own it. I do. It's Dante's Inferno.

However, I have not tagged it ULTB and there are 10,000+ people with it in LT so why in the heck is it on this list?

Does that mean someone else has tagged the thing ULTB? If so, why when I go to the page does it not show up in the tag list for "related tags" or somewhere else?

Any ideas what is happening there? Is it a bug or is someone very bad at their ULTB tag?

32Keeline
mayo 11, 2011, 1:35 pm

Looking further I see a number of books that have large numbers of users that are tagged by someone as ULTB so I guess Dante's Infero is one of them and it just happens to be one I own too.

It just surprised me.

Others that are mistagged include:
The Hacienda: http://www.librarything.com/work/16346
The Western Experience: http://www.librarything.com/work/15584
Oxford Book of 16th Century Verse: http://www.librarything.com/work/237678
History of Pendennis:http://www.librarything.com/work/237343

And probably a lot of others. Oh well.

33staffordcastle
mayo 11, 2011, 1:38 pm

Probably a situation where combining hadn't happened yet when they tagged it ULTB. I had that happen to me the other day, and found that it had been mis-combined; after I separated it out, it went back to being unique.

34vpfluke
Editado: mayo 11, 2011, 10:29 pm

There is something wrong with the tag list the first book lsted on the tag page, ( http://www.librarything.com/tag/ultb ), is the Michelin Red Guide: Great Britain and Ireland of which I owned three books from different years. Now Michelin Red Guides are published each year, and are better combined through a series effort. (This is not true for Mihelin Green Guides). However my three Red Guides had been combined into as a single work. So, I separated them, but the tag page shows them as combined still, even though they have been separated for several months.

In addition for a couple of books, which few own, and I put into LT in mid-March, my tags do not show with the work, although they show in my catalogue. So, if this isn't rectified by next week, Im thinking of putting in a bug report, as it seems that tags need to be updated.

edit: I can see that the Michelin Red Guide Touchstone doesn't work, so here is the linK: http://www.librarything.com/work/1385311 .

35setnahkt
mayo 12, 2011, 7:56 pm

Knocked my ULTB list from around 1000 to around 950 by doing some combining. Need combining help with "United States Census Bureau", though, which has gotten combined with a bunch of other US government agencies. May have made things worse trying to fix it.

36misericordia
Editado: mayo 19, 2011, 5:37 pm

The combining thing does look to be a problem with the Michelin Guides. Some sort of cache issue perhaps.

But, one thing that is always going to be a problem is "unofficial" nature of tags. One persons tag does not have to mean what the other persons tag does.

I dug into the the Dante's Inferno issue. It may be that some has tagged Dante's Inferno as ULTB for their own personal reasons outside of our use of this tag to mean "Unique Library Thing Book". Perhaps they have tagged it as ULTB to mean "Upstairs Library This Building" or "Universal Liberation Theme Bad".

If you go to the main works page for Inferno and expand the "all tags" there are some very interesting tags. Here are my favorites:
adult humor
babysitting
colorado shelf
dudes
irretrievably wet
OMG IMPORTANT
"Seriously the scariest book I've ever read in my life. it gave me nightmares and im a grown man "

I can't really figure out how to find what user has tagged it ULTB. Can anyone figure this out?

37muumi
mayo 22, 2011, 7:53 am

I did another sweep through my almost 400 ULTB tagged books and found a few more that had acquired a second listing. One I even did the combining! I had the Italian/English/Spanish trilingual edition, checked in case it had been added with a monolingual title, and found someone had added a French translation.

There's another reason, besides bragging rights, that it's a good idea to check the ULTB books. I found that a VERY esoteric local history book from the area of Avoch, Scotland, - Rosehaugh - now had a second owner, and discovered a new "interesting library" with several promising titles for my wishlist.

Click on "your books", then click on the blue arrows in the toolbar running along the top of your library. That's the sorting button. Here you can select which category to sort your books for. If you click "total members", you should get a list of your books sorted according to the number of LT members who share that work.

While sorting for "total members" you'll also get the opportunity to sort "up" or "down". Sorting "up" lists your books from fewest members to most; "down" works the other way. For ULTB purposes, you'll want "up".

ULTB books are the ones that are indicated as owned by only one member, i.e. you.

I agree, wishlisted books are different creatures from the books on our shelves. I feel the same way about ebooks. I have them, but I don't, if you know what I mean.

Hi Group,

Just bought 3 new book shelves (Billy). Now my only problem is where to put them. Also got a friend to make a set of mini second shelves to double stack my paper backs on one shelf (non Billy)

Well, after I get my books out of the boxes and off the floor, I swear I will start to scan my UTLT covers (and also the ones whose covers bear no resemblance to mine) several hundred unfortunately :-(

I was just wondering how you (you organized peoples) prioritise this? ie. most obscure book first? A book with some hope it will lose its singleton status soon...?

Or what?

Closest to the desk.

I have sometimes flagged "need to scan" books with sticky notes, so when the scanner became available I could start on one bookshelf and work my way across. I tend to be more methodical spatially than categorically.

54Keeline
Editado: Jul 11, 2011, 12:46 pm

We scanned ours spatially too and now only have some academic books that my husband didn't want to stop to scan yet to finish up. I have to go back and pick through my shelves for those so we can get it completed. The days he was entering those books, he just didn't want to get interrupted by the scanner and they aren't a collection so much as a category of usable books. :)

He was much more thorough on his own shelves so we have a lot of books scanned.

55PhaedraB
Jul 11, 2011, 5:16 pm

Also, I always put a little removable dot, the kind they sell for color coding, on the back of books I've already cataloged (right over the ISBN so I can't miss it). On an unscanned book, I'll write a little "s" on it. But the sticky note flags are faster to find.

56jjmcgaffey
Jul 11, 2011, 8:15 pm

52> I scan covers as I enter the books - not upload, because I do some fiddling first, but scan them so I only have to deal with the computer and not finding the books. For books on my shelves - I have all the ones that don't have good covers yet in a collection called Working On; I do a search, for instance on books tagged SF in Working On and sort them by author so that I can reach out and grab a bunch (my SF bookshelves are by my desktop). And again, I scan them and put them back, then later deal with the scans.

57staffordcastle
Jul 12, 2011, 3:44 pm

I printed out a list of the ones that needed scanning, then for a long time, it was just doing the ones that I could quickly find. Having exhausted those, I am now working shelf by shelf, which has flushed out quite a few of the ones that were hiding.

Oh, I forgot - I also marked the ones that need covers in my mobile database, where I rate and review before putting the info on LT. So if I read a book and see that it's marked as needing a cover, I scan it before I put it away.

Which is why there are 31 books currently sitting on my desk waiting for me to get around to scanning them...sigh.

61jjmcgaffey

Weeellll...I have a lot of books that I've applied covers to just to get rid of the Amazon one - the cover currently on it is either the wrong cover or the right cover in very poor quality. So I use my collection to gather _some_ of what the Stats/Memes page would show as Member-uploaded cover chosen by you, because as far as I'm concerned they still need work.

I did use Stats/Memes for getting rid of all the Amazon covers, and I'm slowly chipping away at the blank and best-guess covers.

Another sweep through the ultb books added another few dozen to the ultbnomore tag. Down to 370 unique books. Although when I checked one of the no longer ultb books, excited to see whose library had this extremely obscure fiction, I discovered that there is someone actually researching Victorian religious fiction, but the book had also been added by somebody who had over 13 THOUSAND books in their wishlist and only 300 in their library. If they were the only other person with an ultb I wouldn't think that would affect the book's uniqueness in the least. There isn't any way to adjust for libraries like this, is there?

Ene 8, 2012, 11:32 am

It's about a year since I checked mine; I had to remove a few but added a good number more, so have ended up with 92. But during the process I saw something odd.

I started by checking for tagged books that were now in another library by searching my library for the 'ULTB' tag. When I found one with other members, I looked to see who they were (by clicking on the 'number of members' link to go to the work page.) For 4 of them, no other members showed up, yet 'number of members' was still 2. When I finished the process and sorted my library by number of members per book, those 4 books had gone back to being owned by only one LT member.

Some sort of caching issue? Or a DB cleanup provoked by my searches? I don't know which, but perhaps it's worth others checking that those numbers of other members actually correspond to reality.

67vpfluke

70guido47
Ene 8, 2012, 8:05 pm

Go to your books then sort (up down arrow icon) by "total members" those with a 1 are (probably) unique. Unless they haven't been combined.

71jjmcgaffey
Ene 8, 2012, 8:14 pm

69> There isn't a shared column by itself any more, but you can see how many own a book in the icon column on the right of your catalog. To sort by it, use the button with the up and down arrows and sort by Total Members ascending (to get the low numbers at the beginning).

67> Leaves as in has TPTB delete their account? Books go poof. Leaves as in stops coming to LT, or lets a yearly account lapse? Books remain - in the latter case, they can't add any more, but however many they added during their paid year(s) can stay.

66> Not sure - I started out thinking some of them might have been in private libraries, but if the number of members went back to 1 that can't be it. Possibly some sort of caching holding on to variants of your entry? If you changed the title/author, it makes multiple editions in the work...but if there's no book attached, it's not supposed to count.

I went from 192 ULTBs to 184 - subtracted a lot, added a few. There are more filkers (singers of filksongs) on LT than there were before...

Click on "your books"
The 2nd LT "tool bar" has a box with the words "STYLE"
The UP/Down arrows are there (in blue) click that.
The drop down menue gives you a choice.
Then pick total members and set "ascending in the "radio button" then you should be there. that number (if 1 - next to the head and shoulders icon, you have already seen, tells
you the book is (probably) unique to you!)

79, 81> Ah, that's it - but it can be fixed, I use the variant _ultb but I combined it with ULTB. I'll see if I can combine ultb in as well.

82> I don't count wishlist books...not sure whether I'd count ebooks, I don't have any uniques. I think I would count them, I have them for certain definitions of "have" - but my wishlist books may be out there somewhere but I don't own them. YMMV - I can see your point, it is a unique book _on_LT_, but I don't count them.

ETA - no, that's not it. sneuper uses ultb (unless it got changed in the last few hours) which is the standard spelling - and ULTB is already combined in, so it shouldn't have not shown up anyway. {confused}

I understand your issue with claiming wishlist and ebooks, that is why I broke them out rather than just claiming to have 69.

I decided to list the ebooks because I have read and used them in writing papers. I wrote reviews for at least two of them. They are not on my shelves except as files on disk or in my Kindle but they are in my head. At least that is my rational for mentioning them.

The wishlist books I track so that I can get my hands on them when the opportunity arises. One is likely beyond hope, the only copy I know of is in the Rare Book room in the Cincinnati Public Library. I did manage to grab one recently when I found it at a price I could afford. Once the three books I am lusting after from a publishers catalog hit the stores I doubt they will be unique to my library very long.

From the first post: "I've just had to remove the tag from another 3 of my books. :("

I've just gotta say I hold the exact opposite attitude.

I understand the desire to be unique and to own unique things, but, well, when I add a book and discover that it is a ULTB it is my hope that other people will become aware of it through my actions and will become interested in it and that I will help it to no longer become a ULTB. I mention this in my profile, but I do not own a huge collection of books. I READ huge numbers of books (I completely abuse interlibrary loan) but I only buy perhaps 1% of what I read: I buy the very best, the cream of the crop, the books I consider to be WORTH owning. And if I love a book so much as to own it and therefore post it as part of my collection, only to find that it has no other owners on the site, well, I feel it deserves more. My hope for all books that are ULTBs is that, through my intervention, they will no longer BE ULTBs.

I don't keep a "list" of my ULTBs, but if I did, I would _celebrate_ every time I was able to delete a book from it.

>86 unicoherent: alucek - I agree! I want to share my love for My Personal Books. I just removed the ultb from a half dozen books. I'm glad other people have them now. I wonder if they're new to LT. But whatever.

On another note, quite a few of my ultb's (from which I just deleted the tag) "say" they have 3 members, but when I checked, there were only two listed.

I think this issue has been mentioned here before.

Yesterday I added a book to my wishlist and was happy to see that I was not the only other one to list the book. Natural and statistical view; or picture of Cincinnati and the Miami country, illustrated by maps. With an appendix, containing observations on the late earthquakes, the aurora borealis, and the south-west wind published in 1815 to promote Cincinnati is has an appendix that is an eyewitness account of the events of the biggest earthquake in the history of the United States, the 1812 New Madrid Earthquake.

So far all I have located is images of those pages on a USGS web page but seeing that someone else lists seems to mean that I have a better chance of finding the rest of it.

Between comics, magazines, original Bulgarian books (not too many members from there so most of my books end up singletons) and some of my Elizabethan stuff, I seem to have quite a lot of those... Need to figure out what I really want to tag though.

91jjmcgaffey
Mar 29, 2012, 8:02 pm

87> That (3 members counted but only 2 listed) may mean that one of you has two copies, or that there's a private library with it (sometimes that shows up as "private library", sometimes it doesn't show up at all in the list of members). I had a bunch of ULTBs that were listed as having 2 copies - but I had both of them, so I left them as ULTBs.

Most of mine are either music books (filk music - science fiction folk songs) or cookbooks (of which I have waaaaay too many - but I can never resist those little booklets of "how to cook (ingredient)"). But it is neat when someone else has one of my solo books - there are a lot more filkers on LT than when I started tracking my ULTBs.

Isn't this doubling-up thing a bug? A few of my ultbs show two copies when no other member is listed and I have only one copy. I think most, if not all, of these are manual entries which I subsequently edited. That process can, I believe, leave a zero copy around but in these cases both variants are single copies.

94jjmcgaffey

I just did some more adding and pruning, and a now at 558 compared with 566 at Message 50. I still have 3 books marked at ULTB which are annual type publications whose various years have been combined. I need to go in and organize them into proper series/serials.

96TLCrawford

Today I moved one from my wishlist to the my bookshelf. The count is now 45 physical books, 13 ebooks, and 15 on the wish list, most of those were published in the last decade, two have not been published yet.

97unicoherent
Abr 4, 2012, 9:07 am

I've noticed that sometimes when I look at a list of my books, it will list my ultb's by saying "no other members" and other times just by saying "1" (this has no relation to whether I am logged in or not" I think when you first add a book to your collection it gives you data on owners other than you. and when you look at your library it usually (but not always?) lists data on owners including you...

98misericordia
Abr 4, 2012, 10:34 am

Where does it say "no other members"? I have never seen that.

When you select the "Your Books" tab and then sort the grid by tag, (enter tag:ultb in the search your library textbox) in the right hand column what do you see? There is a silhouette with a number beside it. That is the number of copy count. what does it say there?

99unicoherent
Abr 4, 2012, 10:38 am

When you add go to "Add Books" after you click on the appropriate book from the list generated by your search a box will appear at the upper right of the page and if you are the only one to own a copy of that book it says "no other members" in the section for number of other people owning it. That's the only time I've seen it. And once you navigate away from that page, you can't go back to it (unless you "recreate" it by deleting the book from your collection and then re-adding it), so essentially you never run into that.

100misericordia
Abr 4, 2012, 2:45 pm

So this happens only when you are adding books not when you are listing your books. OK. I understand now.

I guess I like that feeling that I'm no longer the only person in the world* who has an interest in a particular book.

I was able to look at your pinterest without an account, which actually kind of surprised me, because I seem to remember it as one of those sites where you couldn't look at all below the fold before getting an annoying popup telling you to join/login to see more. Which was always a turn-off to me. How was I supposed to know if I'd be interested in joining a site where I couldn't even see for 2 seconds what it was about? </rant> Anyway, nice cover scans! Yeah, I no longer bother to follow Pinterest links on Twitter etc - since I can't see anything, it's not worth doing. I do _have_ a Pinterest account, but if they want me to jump through hoops I can't be bothered with them any more. I have no idea what they were thinking...I mean, as a way of killing interest in a site that consists of links to other sites, forcing login or app seems quite efficient. I don't _think_ that's what they intended...but it seems to have worked, nonetheless.

I haven't checked my ULTBs in quite a while. I suppose I ought to do that sometime soon. But I have a huge lot of books to enter, that I haven't gotten to yet...that's more important.

My number of ultb books has come down and I both add and remove . From the books in " your library " ( total 15857 , I have 2354 as ultbs , just under 15 % . But this number is a strong reflection of collecting Africa related books , with fewer people round the world in LT interested in this area , although there are some big collectors in the USA . As the South African book market is much smaller I think print runs were and still are much lower than elsewhere . Also the older the book the more obscure it is .. My book collection tends to be older books .

Let's try this again. Forgot to hit 'post' the first time!

Just found this thread.

The magic counter says I have 22 pages of items that are unique. Right off the bat I need to check a few as I'm guessing the combiners haven't found them but then I never go there as my main reason for putting material in here is to keep track of my collection.

I'll have to start using the UTLB as I have time. Another LT game for me. My other one is looking at how many people are in at any one time!

Enough . . . have to get ready for a meeting of the Christian Sanderson Museum. I'm the curator and right now the facilities guy as we have had no president since November. . .

Quick bump that it's worth checking your lists again soon. Tim has unveiled a new tool which makes finding potential combinations much easier. About 100k works are going through the busy hands of eager combiners, and it's likely that some of our ULTBs will be involved.

Took two out of this account, but 16 out of the other account. I had to do some separating, though, because over-eager combiners combined some language practice tapes with the textbooks.

I cheat a tiny bit in that if it is only one actual physical volume and I have it once in my dead husband's account and once in my own account (because I read it), I still count it as an ULTB. Also if two copies of the same work. If I or he were the only ones who had the work, it's still ULTB in my book.

It has been a while since I checked, I had to take 7 off the lists, some now have 3 and 4 listings here. I only have 38 physical ULTBs, a very small percentage of my books. E books I have 57 listed, mostly 18th century publications digitized at the Cincinnati Public Library. There are another 23 in my wish list, also mostly 18th century and/or medical history. There are 4 more that I marked with a -SF suffix that I read for a class on ecological history, specifically on water usage in Africa and the Nile. Three were very specific topics but the forth was The Nile : Biology of an Ancient River which is also specific but I would think it would have a much wider appeal.
