A number of us are going to dive into Martin's A Game of Thrones for Fantasy February, so we thought it'd be fun to read it together!

Since this is a bit impromptu, I'm not inclined to set firm dates, but perhaps we can aim to start some discussion by February 12?

This is a very large book - we may end up wanting to split threads by parts of the book. Does anyone have suggestions for how to go about this?

we could split by character POV since Martin does that.

> 3 I already did! It's there twice now. ;) It looks like mine was out of order - I'll delete it.

I don't have the book handy (it's at home) at the moment, but if I remember correctly, the character POV splits would be a great way to break up the discussion. People could still read ahead, but it no talking until that part was up.

Like 2/12 for the first POV discussion to start. Maybe two weeks for each one. That way if people are reading other things they won't fall too far behind.

#4 - oops. I missed it the first time... :)

Okay, sounds great! We'll keep this thread for general organization and maybe overall comments and split discussion threads by PoV. When I get the book in hand, I'll start some - or someone else is welcome to!

I'm working my way through the series now (I'm on the third book), but I'll be lurking here on the group read!

I have this ready to start reading tomorrow, so once I'm in a bit I'll get the other threads up and running! Very much looking forward to it.

I started reading the book last Friday but only got 30 pages done. I'm in for this group read.

Just picked it up at the library today - though if I like it enough by a bit in I may have to go buy it for myself - the library's paperback copy is pretty nasty (but I've been trying to utilize the public library when possible now that I once again live in a town with a public library that has much of anything, lol)

I was disappointed to get my library copy in paper-back size with tiny print close to the binding, and of course, it's exceedingly thick. It's going to be a pain to actually sit and read.

I guess beggars can't be chooses, though!

I went to pull my copy off the shelf and discovered that somewhere along the line I have acquired two copies. I'd be happy to share my extra if someone needs - just send me a PM. Both are the thick paperback versions.

Picking up the book to get started today and realized the POV's change chapter to chapter. My paper back has 807 pages. Perhaps splitting that up into quarters or thirds?

Yeah, I started at lunch today and thought the same thing. If only the chapters were /numbered/.

This series is my absolute favorite fantasy of all. *sigh* How I wish I were reading this book for the very first time.

We could list the person and the first couple words...that shouldnt give anything away, but will help keep people at least near the same place.

I'm reading this one on my Nook. It's my first Nook book and I thought that no chapter numbers was the norm for Nook books. Shows how much I know. Since each of us is using a different edition from which to read, I think that listing the name of the person and the first couple of words would work well. I would also like to suggest that we divide the book into three parts. I doubt it will divide into equal thirds, but something approximating that length should work for purposes of discussion.

Since I have not seen any objections to just dividing into three parts, I took my copy and figured out about what 1/3 would be on my page 272.

Chapter: Eddard

First words: The Hand's tourney....

I don't think that really gives too much away.

I'm going to have to backout - I'd planned to read this - and even picked it up from the library - but the library copy is just so nasty, and I can't justify buying another book at this point when I have so many left I haven't read, and so much I need to read from my "professional reading" list...

Oh no! Sorry to hear that.

Jasmyn, thanks a ton - I'll go ahead and start a new thread for that so we can sort of 'start fresh' on discussion.

The first 1/3 thread is here.

I also added it to the wiki!

I might join you all if that's okay. I've had this book set aside as part of my TBR Challenge for the last couple of years, this is a good incentive to finally get it read!

The more the merrier! It's a fantastic story. I read it a few years ago and there's so much to it that it's like I'm starting it for the first time again.

The second 1/3 thread is here! for the second 1/3.

It goes through the end of the Sansa chapter which begins "They came for Sansa" - in my book that's 453.

Link also available on the wiki.

I noticed on the Home page today that Game of Thrones is one of the most-read books on LT currently - 20 people have it listed as currently reading! I wonder how many of them are hanging out in this thread...

30jasmyn9

I don't label what I'm reading as currently reading...so that makes 21.
