the wife and i finally got into the season last night with the viewing of our favorite Christmas classics.

first up, The Grinch (of course!).
but this was really just the warm up for...

The Christmas Pudding.
this is the Christmas episode from the old 50's TV show, starring Ronald Howard as a lukewarm Holmes and H. Marion Crawford as a wonderful Dr. Watson.
and then the feature...

The Blue Carbuncle.
what can i say? this is not only a great Christmas episode, but also stands as one of the best in the entire Jeremy Brett series (in my not-so-humble opinion), with David Burke at his finest. this one has it all... deduction (the fantastic sequence with Holmes examining the hat), characters (Mr Windigate of the Alpha Inn, and Mr. Breckinridge, "a purveyor of the finest quality" ("I'll have a sovereign with you just to teach you not to be obstinate!"), the wormish criminal James Ryder ("There's not enough blood in him for felony!"), and one cannot forget the perfectly cast Frank Middlemass as the unfortunate Henry Baker ("We must not deprieve those we love, or even those to whom we are married.") LOL! i don't know what else he has been in, but those gin blossoms alone are worth what ever he earned for the episode!

so are household is now in the mood. and to you and all of yours, "... the Season's Greetings!"

Enodia, thanks for the suggestion. Watched The Blue Carbuncle on Christmas, enjoyed it greatly. The back-and-forth between Holmes and Watson was, as always, a treat, and the wry humor provided much fun!

My wife is Jewish so we don't make a big thing out of Christmas.

My Christmas spirit largely consisted of a string of Blue LED Christmas lights, a copy of Holmes for the Holidays and a good old British traditional pack of PAXO stuffing, cooked together wit SAGE sausage.

I agree so much about the Blue Carbuncle - it's one of my favorite Jeremy Brett episodes (although, honestly, they all are!). I look forward to watching that one again!
