I thought that if anyone was familiar with L.J. Smith, it's probably the under 30 crowd. When I was in high school, I was obsessed with her books, especially The Vampire Diaries series (which is being reissued as a new edition in July according to Amazon) and the Dark Visions trilogy. For a while she had a longer series going called The Night World, but that seems to have ended as well. Any Smith fans out there who know anything more than this?

I'm familiar with this author, but haven't touched her books in what seems a lifetime. (About eight to ten years ago.) I read multiple series by her, and all the ones you list sound like series I've read. The Night World series is what you're most interested in learning about?

Okay, I searched Barnes & Noble to find out this. It seems they're out of print. (Sorry about that!) These are the titles:

#1 Secret Vampire
#2 Daughters of Darkness
#3 Spellbinder
#4 Dark Angel
#5 Chosen
#6 Soulmate
#7 Huntress
#8 Black Dawn
#9 Witchlight

Maybe you should try to find them used, or check the author's website (if she has one) to see about any possible re-publications (even by a different publisher). Sometimes I bookmark publishers of my favorite authors and check their publishing status to see if anything's coming out by them when the author fails to mention it on their site.

Thanks for the info Kerian.

I looked around a little bit more and found this on Wikipedia:

Though the release date for this book has been pushed back every year since 1999, LJ Smith remains dedicated to finishing the series. Still, roadblocks and broken promises at every turn frustrate patient fans.

The forum at lj-smith.com states: "The last known communication from LJ Smith about Strange Fate said it was done and all of the Nightworld series was scheduled to be republished last fall (with minor alterations to account for the millennium having already happened) prior to SF being released, and now that's passed right by and not happened." (2006)

I wonder what happened to her. It could be that I'm remembering these books through high-school-colored glasses (It's been about 10 years now for me too. Geez), but I remember liking them more than Twilight or New Moon, which I've read now as an adult.

I, too, have done searches on an author who sometimes seems to have disappeared yet is still with us. It often has me wondering how his health is doing.

I actually started a thread on authors who are MIA in my Upcoming Books group, which you should join if you have any interest in that sort of thing. (Shameless self-promotion over.)

Who is your disappearing author? Mine are Melanie Rawn and Susan Kay, and some others have mentioned Jean Auel.

Well, he's an author who was MIA till I found him on a small publisher's site. His name is Charles De Lint. An absolute favorite of mine! Another is Terri Windling. She was/is an editor for TOR as well as a writer. She's written very little, but stopped editing annual fantasy and horror collections because she was cooking something up again.

One of my favorite books is Twilight. I loved the book and I loved the author. Stephenie Meyers is soooooo cool and nice

be_safe, obviously you're not alone. Eclipse, the third book by Stephanie Meyer is already on the Amazon list; and it doesn't come out until August.

You should really check out L.J. Smith when the reissue of the first two books of The Vampire Diaries comes out in July. I really think you'll like them.

bookishy, yes I know a lot about Twilight and New Moon and Stephenie Meyers.

Yeah I was checking that out online. I think I will.

I loved LJ Smith, especially Dark Visions. But it's been a long time since I re-read any of her books, probably about 8 years.

I think she stopped writing because of an illness in her family. I've pretty much given up hope of ever seeing Strange Fate.

Well, it's understandable that she stopped writing then, but it still makes me sad. Zoe, Dark Visions was my favorite, too. Every once and awhile I'm tempted to buy used copies off Amazon and start over again.

Strange Fate was supposed to be released in 1998, but apparently, an illness in the family kept L.J. Smith from finishing the series. It's a real bummer because the storylines of the nine-something books in the series are supposed to all come to a close in the last book.

You can still buy the Nightworld series online (out-of-print), but paperbacks cost quite a lot. I would say it is worth it though; the Nightworld series is definitley L.J. Smith's finest work.
