Thought I'd check in and see what is going on with other group members.
We are doing last minute preparation for winter here in New England. The gardens are turned/over, firewood is stacked, now I'm weather stripping windows and doors and gathering the last of the swisschard. What's happening at your homesteads?

Hmmmm.... is anyone out there? Cooler temps have come to New England (4 degrees Far. yesterday morn.) Although the parsley & fennel have held strong I think this cold snap has ended their season. Still no real snow here.
Hope you all have wonderful Holiday's and we wish Peace on Earth to us all! Dave

We're not even close to being self-sufficient. Years ago we had hydro for almost a week due to bad weather. With the economy going the way it is, we became interested in learning to be more self-sufficient. Growing and preserving as much food as we can. Seed storing, buy local food and products whenever possible.

I tried to gather as much information as I could on everything self-sufficient and low impact living. It will take years to get to where we want to be. We have had snow on the ground this week and have been running around to the house preparing it for the cold season. We brought in our herbs months ago. Some I dried, others I cut up and froze in ice cube trays, ready for soups and stews. A couple down the road gave us some tomato plants that grew tiny tomatoes with a thicker than usual skin (he couldn't remember what they were called but said they freeze well), last year we ate them all through the winter, we froze more this year. Hope you have a wonderful holiday too!

Well on my last post I said we had no snow... I guess I tempted fate as we have 7' snow banks now. Is anyone interested in free snow? Please come and take as much as you want (limit 24 tons per person please). The one good thing about a hard Winter is that it makes us look forward to Spring all the more, and it builds muscle shoveling all that snow.
Hope the seed catalogs come soon.
Be well, Dave
