New list is here:
list of things that cannot be translated (part 2)

After consulting Abby I start this topic where we can list all the things that cannot be translated on pages that otherwise are translated.

I start with this:

on Add books page these cannot be translated:

Advanced options |
Skip confirmation (for barcodes and ISBNs)
Entering Borders product codes (about)

Some users want to keep using the old search. "Title/author" has some advantages with non-Latin material. "Tags" focuses on whole tags, not words in tags.

On Zeitgeist books page:

Notes: See standard deviation for more on this concept. Basically, if everyone basically agrees that an author's books are good or bad, the standard deviation is low. If opinions differ a lot, the standard deviation of ratings is high. The "completist" score identifies authors of books people have in droves. All statistics are updated nightly, if possible, or more frequently, if possible.

Re 23 and 24: On a book's page, just under "Elsewhere on the Web", next to Wikipedia: None

If this system "elsewhere on the web" is going to cover multiple sites (not just Wikipedia), then why list Wikipedia's name at all, when there are no occurrences? The phrase "none" is bound to become a homonym with translation problems. Translating "no occurrences" would be easier. But is this phrase needed at all?

#50: Why on earth not? As far as I'm concerned, that's the single highest-priority improvement for Talk. There are plenty of threads with 100+ messages, and it would be immensely useful if we could mark the message we'd read up to and keep the rest unread. As it is, I just avoid the long threads, or give up after reading part of them and don't continue later.

edit: er, I guess I'm actually responding to #51 now. It's one of those interesting occurrences where the response comes before the message it's responding to.

Other problems/errors/bugs at the same pages :

B.1. -- review frame bottoms have the month abbreviation in English instead of using the proper language;

B.2. -- flagged reviews have technical crap instead of showing a proper flag image. The latter is most probably because of a bug residing in the HTML code that is used.

The problem seems to be that Tim's machine is using an alternative time--LTTA or TPT (Tim's Present Time) instead of LTT (LT Time)--making for his messages appearing "in the future" and thus latter messages appearing as earlier ones.

Because of this, Tim's message time stamped "vandaag, 11:40am" is raising still.

One solution, that has been proposed several times, 'd be to stick with (e.g.) UTC, thus providing for a most accurate time stamp instead of a winky one with different kinds of LTT not being synchronised.

Re 34: The "last updated" can now be translated, but the time is always given in AM/PM, as are the timestamps for these discussion forums, by the way. In Swedish language and in all countries where Swedish is spoken (i.e. both Sweden and Finland), the 24 hour clock is used. Standard Perl (and I guess PHP) functions follow the locale set by the script, and it should work great to set setlocale(LC_TIME, "sv_SE.utf8") or so before calling strftime() or whatever these functions are called in PHP. Proper use of locale could clear up a lot of confusion around month and day names as well.

You might want to fetch inspiration from how MediaWiki (also written in PHP) does this. If you ever think we non-English LT users are pestering you with details of internationalization (and we are), remember that the poor MediaWiki developers have taken this beating since 2001.

No. I tend not to let things be translated at first, before I know what's going to happen to the page. That's somewhat stable now, so I'm going it.

>Did any of you find that things have turned yellow and english again, that were translated ages ago and were just fine? I also cannot find that there were changes to the original text (which would explain them turning yellow again). *scratches head*

You might try refreshing the page. Sometimes it loses the yellow, but it remembers the translation.

>Translation problems are boring compared to developing fun new features, I think.

That's true, I suppose. But it's also something that's best done in masses—like this! There's an overhead to making changes. You have to find the problem, make the change, push it and then push the push. If you can do fifty changes, you can avoid pushing it all until the end, as I've done here.

I think that translations are for those who cannot English at all or only a little. I have gotten the impression that most LibraryThingers use English interface if they are fluent enough. So, there should be a solution to provide some kind of translation of everything that has some relevance to the users. Could the translations of these legal things and such be in brackets or in footnotes or something?

But a law suit in Albania, or any country in Europe, probably won't get anywhere. If you're sued, you want to be sued outside the US :-)

Library names. In the Swedish language version of LibraryThing, it would be nice to see the Swedish names of libraries.

The Royal Library of Sweden = Kungliga biblioteket

Royal Institute of Technology = Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan

Göteborg University = Göteborgs universitet

As with all translated terms on LibraryThing, the starting point should be the English names.

>112 LA2:
Libris is actually a national library system with more than 300 libraries. The Royal Library System of Sweden is responsible of maintenance of Libris, but the catalogue of Kunglika biblioteket is Regina. Isn't it so?

I agree that it should be possible to translate the libraries names.

114timspalding
Nov 30, 2007, 1:16 am

Here's what I put on the blog:

Library name translations is an interesting one. You'll notice our names are a mixture of English and the language of the library. We chose them not entirely at random. Some things have form that most people who need to recognize, will. But it's not perfect, as you point out. Opening it to translation, however, could get very hairy insofar as so many are the same damn thing (eg., The Royal Library). And in English, for example, one does not say "State Museum" but the Rijksmuseum; and I don't feel that Yale University or Oxford need to be translated into every language in LT.

Not easy.

115LA2
Nov 30, 2007, 2:29 am

114, Tim, yes you're correct that Rijksmuseum isn't translated to English, and neither to Swedish. In the 1960s, the Library of Congress was translated into "Kongressbiblioteket" in Swedish news reports, but not anymore. Now you write Göteborg University, but 30 years ago you might have written Gothenburg University. Still, in Swedish it's Göteborgs universitet (lowercase 'u' and a genitivie -s without apostrophe). We do translate the names of Denmark, Germany, Sweden, even Copenhagen and Munich, but not Berlin or Stockholm. We used to translate Gothenburg, but today use Göteborg. The most subtle case is the German town Hannover, which in English is Hanover with just one N. The Swedish name of the Danish capital is Köpenhamn, quite different from the natives' København. However, Swedish librarians do say Det kongelige Bibliotek in Danish without translation, so it's quite easy to distinguish from Kungliga biblioteket (with lowercase b) in Stockholm.

113, Anneli is right. Records are actually imported from LIBRIS, which is a union catalog for all Swedish college and research libraries and a growing number of public libraries. This system is maintained at the Royal Library in Stockholm, and most often associated with it. However, the Royal Library also has a separate catalog system called Regina for their own holdings. (Don't ask me why that's necessary!) In the big overhaul of LibraryThing's data source import system recently, we saw the Libris source being renamed to (replaced by a new source named) The Royal Library of Sweden (LIBRIS). Most people don't care about the difference because they never heard of Regina. But for a few people (like Anneli?) it might be a source of confusion.

So what's my recommendation? Should anything change? It would be nice (that phrase means: no hurry to change anything) to be able to translate library names. However, I don't think they should ever turn up in yellow markup just because they haven't been translated. Would it be possible to pre-check the "okay as it is" box? And put all library names on a separate translation page, so they are hidden from the list of per-page translations?

116timspalding
Nov 30, 2007, 9:17 pm

I like your suggestions. We *could* put them elsewhere and at least check them once for each language, if even we can't do pre-checked. I'm going to shelve this for now. People are up in arms over the green-plus and other such issues, and there are other issues to do with non-Latin libraries people will be up in arms over. The angry stuff needs to come first.

Ah, yes, you're getting caught by non-signed-in caching on non-www domains. We are getting hammered by spiders. A spider will spend hours taking every single page from the Bulgarian domain, for example. Well, that's terrabytes of information and lots of database access for a site with fewer than 50 users. So if you're not signed in, you tend to get cached pages on non www.

I don't know whether www.librarything.nl is "non www", but (even) when signed in, at www.LT.nl, (too), pages are cluttered with 'untranslated' stuff all over now.

140erpe

141GirlFromIpanema

142timspalding
Editado: mayo 4, 2008, 4:23 pm

As stated before, alone among users, I don't read and indeed don't care what boekerij has to say about this or any issue. Indeed, a thread that he touches is about 50% less likely to be read by me, particularly as they tend to veer off into battles between him and others about whether misspelling his name is a personal attack. It is to my regret that I am not the callous dictator he continually accuses me of being, and can't throw him out unless he violates the terms of service, again.

I'll look into the missing translations.

We agreed a long time ago to use "network" in German for Connections but at this prominent spot someone made a word-for-word translation that tells you nothing about Connections :-P

I thought that translations disappear from the translation pages after they are cheered several times (I don't remember how many), but I have gotten the impression that sometimes they disappear without warning. It is annoying if some spelling error or bad translation cannot be corrected.

Tim
I think this is not the problem.
Even if I see yellow text I don't receive anything to translate.
For example: today on the page "http://www.librarything.es/work/544902/commonknowledge" I see in yellow "Important events".

Pressing the translation link don't retrieve nothing to translate.

#171, Tim: No, there are more of these cases. In the case of #169, I don't think there were any cheers at all (can't see the translation page right now ;-) ). All other occurrences of "connections" were translated to "Netzwerk" except for this.

See also the field Common Knowledge. This had been translated to various German expressions, none of which was liked by the majority. At some point, the translation was "reset" to the original English, maybe by database accident, and from then on couldn't be changed anymore. I cannot remember more than one cheer or so for the original English expression. I did start a new discussion in the DE group to find a good translation, recently.

I can't give you a timeline, but both cases have been around a few months. I had other things going on, so just made a mental note to get back to it sometime --which I am doing now ;-).

I also noted the untranslated language names on the work details page. The German page should have "Deutsch" not "German", etc.
Also, even though the Standard Deviation Notice was translated for the Books page, it has not made it to the Authors page (OK, I only looked at Dutch and German, but I figure it applies to more translations as well).

Much of the text on the New Member Giveaways page isn't available to translate on the "translate this" page. Only the headings, etc. are translatable, and not the description and instructions:
http://www.librarything.fr/er/giveaway/list

The pages for Series do have "translate this" options, but a good portion of the text in the right-hand column is not available to translate on those pages:
- "Series Description"
- "Series?! / How do series work" and all the long instructions about series; this is especially needed since there are lots of publishers' series being entered on the international sites, and that isn't what the field is for.
- "Helpers"

Also, when there is html like a hyperlink in a bit of text being translated, it is lost in the translated version. So if you translate the Site Announcements on the homepage, and there's a link in the announcement, even if you leave in the code for the link, it disappears and the translation becomes just plain text.

This page has "Erstausgabe" (first edition) as a wrong translation for "original work".
The whole page is untranslatable (no yellow Translate link at top).

(I wished people would stop thinking that taking a dictionary and using the first translation given is good enough.)

http://www.librarything.de/work/2103143/book/45844898 :
The label "Common Knowledge" in the left-hand menu of the Work page remains English in the German site and untranslatable. The correct translation has been submitted, see translation page, but it doesn't show up in the menu, even after resubmitting a slightly changed word. In other instances, the new translation shows up (header of the Common Knowledge edit page for ex.).

"unread" is added for translation only once on the thread page. But it is used twice:
- as the status read/unread at the header of an individual message
- as in "3 unread / 188" (in the list of threads in a forum)

It needs to be singular in the first case and plural in the second... and there is no way to work around it in this case - the words are just different in Bulgarian. I was almost sure they are different entries but when I change one, it changes on both places so guess it is not...

"No reviews yet." appearing on a work page that have no reviews http://www.librarything.com/work/8451043/ for examples or on http://www.librarything.com/profile_reviews.php?view=AnnieMod cannot be translated either

On http://www.librarything.com/zeitgeist

Average number of different books held by people who have any books by the author

Don't they show up in the "all untranslated" page?

193GirlFromIpanema
Sep 26, 2009, 5:25 pm

No, they have been translated into German already, albeit sloppily, so they wouldn't show up there (those are only the "never touched" fields, right?).
When I call the translation page for my home page, there are various fields that are not from the home page (but from ER, profile, LT header/tabs, or elsewhere) and only a few that are actually directly on the home page, like the message for Pirate Day, "on this day" etc. None of the customisation Java-box contents show up there.

Probably, *lol*. But I think it's only RealSandy, me and one or two others that are using "all untranslated" regularly (from the German site).
That is going to be one humongously long list then, right?
Is there no other solution to this?

196timspalding
Sep 26, 2009, 6:23 pm

The solution is probably both. The "translate" button is keyed to the URL. We can do special cases—ALSO include strings from this URL—but it's a pain :)

197GirlFromIpanema
Sep 26, 2009, 6:48 pm

If you could include the "where?" link for every snippet, it might help... (missing context is part of the "crappy translations" problem) and maybe sort by number of times changed, so that the non-translated/never-changed stuff is on top?

Editado: Sep 27, 2009, 6:54 am

Uh, oh. Could you bring in the "Where?" link? I think it is very important, since Google cannot find the page concerned in most cases. I tried to find the page where "comma separated, slash separated, etc." is used and failed --my guess is that it doesn't mean "separate by comma, please" (like the current translation) but "list, separated by commas".

Edited: I see it's there now. But it doesn't bring up the location, or the snippet isn't used on the LT local pages I get transported to.

205timspalding
Sep 27, 2009, 2:52 pm

No, generally. The phrases can occur anywhere. The full URLs aren't saved, only the scripts that were used—because URLs change more than scripts. So, anyway, there's no way "back" as it were.

I'll look at a way of doing the popups better. I could, for example, just have all popups share the same code, so they could be edited together.

I should add, btw, that I did a fairly length run-through of the site last night, finding untranslated strings. So it added maybe 20-30 of them. I see they've all been done for French anyway.

I really enjoyed the "all translated" page, very helpful in many ways! Thanks!

Now for some untranslatable stuff:
On my startup page (http://www.librarything.nl/home/sneuper):
- under "author chat", the information next to the author's picture: Marie Sansone discussing Stories of the Road (chat here) from Oct 19, 2009 to Oct 30, 2009.
- in the sections "top wishlisted books" and "what members are reading" the word "by" in every book/author combination (Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut) and "show more" at the bottom of each list.

207GirlFromIpanema
Oct 17, 2009, 7:00 am

Sneuper, Tim recently added a page "See all translated text" to the Translation homepage (left hand column at the very end). It contains nearly every bit of text of LT.com. If you click on the link, be aware that it will take a very long time to load (about 4 min. here), and block your browser, because it's a lot of data. Search for the string there, it should be listed and you can translate it there.

(NB. "See all translated text" should be used for the untranslatable bits only. "Standard" translation work should be done through the individual pages or the "all untranslated" page, because only there you'll get the context.)
