Book tastes

It's probably easier to mention what I don't like. But in general, I'd be interested in the one book you think everybody should have read at least once in their lifetime. It can also be a children's or YA book.
I like poetry and short stories, novels and novellas, but also fiction (about history or nature). Sarcasm and dark humour are very welcome. If you choose horror, I prefer atmospherical one to slasher.
Particularly interested in literature by/about women or by/about minorities. Every genre except new adult.

Don't get this!

Romance/new adult à la Colleen Hoover, Katee Robert, Nora Roberts,... Coelho and anything Coelho-like. Stories that are too foreseeable.

Other notes

Crime and detective stories are welcome - but only if they are really, really good and not foreseeable. I haven't yet found the contemporary crime novel where I didn't know the ending at page 50. :-) Maybe you have got the one for me?
