This is my library of sound recordings.

Contents

It contains recordings from the mid 1890s to the present. The collection includes items in a variety of formats from wax cylinders to compact disks, MP3s and beyond. These illustrate some of the technological changes which have occurred during the history of recorded sound. Although far-from encyclopedic, it represents a sampling of ever-changing musical tastes over time.

Cataloging

The initial focus will be on records made before 1929 starting with cylinder records. Modern copies or re-issues of early or vintage recordings will be added later in addition to later material.

The records are being cataloged according to standard library rules for cataloging sound recordings.

The cylinder record catalog is largely based on information derived from the catalog of the Library System of the University of California, Santa Barbara and various published and on-line record lists.

Catalog entries will also include additional information about the specific record, including format, condition and other related notes when appropriate.

Listening

Records were intended to be listened to. Currently, few of the records listed in this catalog have been transferred to other media (including digital recordings) and are not available for on-line listening.

However, in some cases, digital recordings records are available on-line from various institutions and private individuals. If a copy of a particular record is found to be available for listening on-line, a link will be included in the review section of the catalog listing.
