When Velma's class took a trip to the conservatory (1), The Beginning Knowledge Book of Butterflies talks about where they live at. It talks about how there are several different moths and butterflies. Then it talks about the stages until it becomes a butterfly. When the boy turns into an old man (1), Bob the Dog accidentally swallows a small yellow bird and gets help from all of his friends to help get him back up. The only thing that gets Jeremy the Canary back out is his mother (1), the wolf is nice and just needs to borrow some ingredients for baking. Fiction. (1), This book is filled with the crazy adventures that happened when an otter came out of the water for the day to hang out with a couple of kids. The day was filled with chaos as they try and get rid of the otter. Rhyming words are bold and large (1), Counting book that starts at 1 and doubles each time. This is an easy read (1), possibly kindergarten level (1), A young crocodile is with a flock of flamingos and wonders why he doesn't look like them. He gets upset (1), Little Duckling did not fit in anywhere he went. Eventually (1), he finds out he is one of the swans; it took some time (1), but he became beautiful after all. More advanced than other versions. More detailed with larger words but with the same message. Fiction. (1), Max the duck is trying to make a perfect soup of his own when he went outside to pick some herbs. His friends came over to his house to find him missing and assume that he has fallen into his pot of soup. They destroy the soup trying to "save" him. Funny. (1), and ends up finding other crocodiles that look like him. Could use this to talk about differences between people or animals. Fiction. (1), but would be good for number recognition. Fiction (1), has sarcasm. Would be good to read after reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Fiction. (1), Badger is a great friend to the other animals around him and helped them get their homes ready for a big storm. The rhinoceros ends up saving the day with just a couple skills he is good at. Silly book for children (1), A woman is telling her son about her grandfather's coat that he made. Through the years the coat was repurposed many times and made something special each time (1), but it takes a gnu to get it to fly into the sky. The grumpalump is a large made up animal. Rhyming and repetition. Fiction. (1), but she gets distracted along the way. Spirits appear and guide her to finish her chore and make it back home. Takes place in the African Sama Village. She took it on a trip to see her grandparents (1), only to realize that she left it on the plane. Fiction. (1), Trixie found out that another girl had the same stuffed bunny as her. They accidentally took the wrong bunnies home and had to exchange them back in the middle of the night. Illustrations show more than the words do. Fiction. (1), This biography tells about Mo Willem’s life (1), from his childhood to his career and family. Willems is an author who has many different series of children's books out and is still publishing today. NonFIction. Kid-friendly book. Use to supplement author study. (1), A true story of Hellen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan. Helen did not like Annie at first (1), but when a strong wind storm catches Helen off guard and in trouble (1), Annie comes to save her. Helen learns to trust and love Annie from then on. Use in study of famous Americans. Non-Fiction story. (1), and elephant gets impatient. The surprise is the beautiful night sky with all the stars. Good for reading with expressions (1), Biggie has a surprise for elephant (1), Counting book from 1-10 that rhymes and describes different animals and scenery in Tanzania. At the end of the book (1), Doug is nervous about moving somewhere new. His teacher helps him by telling him to remember all the great things about his home so that he will remember them when he moves to Toronto. Teach students about dealing with change. Great pictures. Phrasing is random on the page so it requires concrete knowledge of directionality. Fiction. (1), an African American boy living during the Great Depression tries to win a sewing machine for his mother by guessing how many beans there are in a jar in a store window. Using math (1), he guesses the amount and wins the sewing machine. His family benefitted from the price (1), but he is still having to eat beans all the time.
