The Louis Riel Library is a collection of books, articles, maps, videos and memorabilia relating to the development of Western Canada and the colonization of Indigenous peoples in the Americas. It is dedicated to the Metis leader Louis Riel (1844 - 1885), founder of the Canadian province of Manitoba (1869 - 1870)and leader of the Saskatchewan Resistance in 1885.

In 1869, Louis Riel, having established a provisional government that created a list of rights outlining the conditions for joining the Canadian confederation, was instrumental in the establishment of the Canadian province of Manitoba. The Canadian government agreed to the conditions, however, instead of sending a Canadian governor, troops were sent in and martial law was established. During a reign of terror Riel and other leaders barely escaped with their lives. Louis Riel would spend over ten years in exile.

In 1884 Riel was called back to the Northwest by the Metis and settlers of Saskatchewan to assist in gaining their rights from the Canadian government as he had done in Manitoba in 1869. When the Metis were informed that North-West Mounted Police had been dispatched to arrest Riel and break-up the movement for democratic rights a provisional government was once again established. Riel and the Metis were once again attacked by Canadian forces. After a valiant resistance their community was overrun and Riel gave himself up to ensure the safety of his people. In a trial of extremely dubious legal character Riel was tried for the crime of High Treason. Sentenced to hang, Riel called out for justice. He called for a Commission of Inquiry into the Career of Louis Riel - a commission that has yet to be established over 125 years later. Louis Riel was executed on November 16, 1885.

The Louis Riel Library is a collection relevant to Riel's request for an inquiry into his career. It contains materials focusing on the colonization process as it relates to Riel and other Indigenous peoples in the Americas. Donations to the Louis Riel library are most welcome.
