Sobre mí
I currently have 75 young adults; thankfully, none of them live with me. I teach 62 8th graders, and my husband and are have 13 teens (12-17 years old) in our youth group at church. I consider them all “mine” because I care about each of them dearly. I care about each of them as a whole person, not just for the short time they are with me.
Although I have never taken a young adult literature class before, I read it and use it on a daily basis. I teach 8th grade resistant readers, and I constantly try to match readers with books. I encourage students to read books on topics that interest them, and I tell them about books I have read or am currently reading. It never fails when I tell a class about a young adult novel, one or more of them beg to read it. It always amazes me that these students say they hate reading, yet want to read when I get enthusiastic about a book. I always tell them at the beginning of the year that I want their reading skills and FCAT score to improve, but, more than anything, I want them to develop a love for reading. They all laugh, but by Christmas, several of them have books on their wish lists.
My current favorite young adult novel is Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikelsen. I love to watch the change in Cole as he evolves from a hardened juvenile delinquent to a caring and forgiving individual. Some of my favorite young adult authors include Sharon Draper, Caroline B. Cooney, and R. L. Stine (his realistic fiction). I enjoy most genres (except science fiction), and I really love anything with an element of suspense.
I do not belong to any formal social networking groups organized around books. However, the fellow reading teachers and I are always discussing books that our students enjoy.
