Favorite Childhood Books

anglemark: The winter landscape on the other side of the wardrobe has haunted my imagination all my life.

Diane-bpcb: MAJOR SPOILER: (Haven't figured out the new Spoiler offering in LT.) Will never forget reading somewhere something by a girl who always fought with her sister, and how she felt when this sister, having read the book first, calls out, "Beth died."

Diane-bpcb: A friend, who had taught grade school got me to read this finally. How did I miss it all these years!! (We read "Stuart Little instead in school, which I also loved.)

ahef1963 : I was always unsettled by the idea of an elephant king, and I was bothered by a book printed in italics.

SaintSunniva: My mother read it to us...and I subsequently read all the Little House books.

ahef1963: The Little House books were the background to all my childhood and early adolescent fantasies. I still want to ride in a covered wagon.

Diane-bpcb: This was my favorite of the Little House books, which I just loved. My sister and I would play covered wagon, using our twin beds as our wagons, etc. Little did we know, in those days, that ancestors had gone West in a wagon train.

Diane-bpcb: There's a Betsy-Tacy society active in Mankato, Minnesota, where you can visit the Betsy and Tacy houses side-by-side in town. I loved all the[ Betsy-Tacy and Tib] books. At the time I read them, I believed that life really had existed in those days without the problems of the 20th century. The friendship of the girls was wonderful. Escapism when I needed it.

ahef1963: Frog and Toad still give me the giggles. I'm in my 50s.

bookworminc: While my definition of a terrible horrible no good very bad day has changed as I grew up - the idea that maybe it's better somewhere else always sticks with you. I know that I still love the title

katie4098 : I only came to appreciate this book as an adult. As a child, I remember feeling really sad when the school librarian read it aloud to us. I didn't like it at all then.

saffron12: Weather. Food. Absolute perfection when I was a kid, and those are still some of my passions as an adult.
