vtlucania: Yes, Thurgood Marshall was the fist Black Supreme Court Justice. Yes, he was a Civil Rights icon. These accomplishments are only part of the story. Thurgood Marshall ascent to the Supreme Court was not smooth or easy. President Lyndon B. Johnson was instrumental and determined to make Thurgood's appointment become reality and his determination likely used all his political capital. Showdown is about all the pieces that had to be brought to alignment to give the United States its first Black Supreme Court Justice. Powerful!

vtlucania: Many people think they dislike History, they do like history. Reading this book is like reading a novel although it is nonfiction. For all those who wonder how Catherine the Great came to be Great, this is the best book I have read about her. In "Catherine" the reader see the Empress from her childhood all the way to her demise and realize she was a human with human conditions.
