Biggest Disappointments

aulsmith: I just couldn't take the resurrection of the dead characters. It was clear Herbert didn't know where to go.

aulsmith : This is an adult book, not a sequel to Tom Sawyer.

jain : Includes "A Study in Emerald," which singlehandedly is enough to elevate this collection for me.

gilroy: After the great book that Ender's Game was, this was a huge let down.

hipdeep: I liked the first 3 books well enough (actually Azkaban was quite good) but this is the one where I found myself pleading with Rowling to get to the dang point already. I thought it was too long by a third.

ahef1963: Wanted to like, but found it extremely troubling.

ahef1963: Didn't know steampunk could be this boring.

ahef1963: I thought this was pretty workaday considering all the good things I'd heard about it.

aulsmith: It just didn't grab me, especially after all the hype from my friends.

aulsmith : Not really a sequel to American Gods. A marketing mistake. I loved what he did with the women.

aulsmith : I suspect that many younger people find it dated, but reading it in the sixties, when we thought we'd be nuked out of existence at any moment, it was both hopeful and scary.

aulsmith: Too long and episodic without an overall point.

aulsmith: Didn't appreciate the satire when I was a child. After Man of La Mancha, it was too late.

aulsmith: Found it nearly incomprehensible.

aulsmith: Found this much less engrossing than 1984 to which it had been compared.

Cecrow: Too much hyperbole raised my expectations

aulsmith: I thought it dragged. It was obvious where the plot was going and I didn't find the jokes worth the time to get there.

jain: I love Sherlock Holmes, but this particular story's very clumsily written.

ahef1963: I could not get through this.

: Painfully unrealistic: couldn't wait to give the book away hence it's not in my Lib Thing.

jain: Great premise; absurdly bad murder mystery plot.

jain: Far more boring than it should've been.

ahef1963: I like Verne so much but was put to sleep by this adventure.

aspirit: One of the queerest books I've read, yet none of its fans talk about that. Anyway, it was more Horror and less SpecFic than I'd expected from personal recommendations.

ahef1963: One of the authors I like the best, and I couldn't get through his most famous work.

jain: Ditto the cut edition. The book starts out great, but it goes off the rails pretty early on.

aulsmith: Heinlein really did need to edit this.

ahef1963: Did not like. Possibly because my husband had just left me - I probably wouldn't have liked any book.

ahef1963: I couldn't even manage a chapter of staggering genius. Overrated, even by the author.

ahef1963: I'd liked The Scarlet Letter so much that I was hoping this one would be as good; it turned out to be extremely dull.

jain : The ending was terrible, but I really liked the first ~3/4 of the book.

Cecrow: Fun deficiency

ahef1963 : Somehow I was led to believe that this book was amusing; I don't find child neglect and abuse funny so I hated it.

jain: I couldn't read more than a couple of pages, the writing style was *so bad*.
