PitcherBooks: YA, All Ages. Award-Winner. 1. It's a well-written, interesting and altogether compelling piece of historical fiction. 2. You can't live in America without reading it at least once. 3. If you love the movie (who didn't?), the book is even better. 1960 Pulitzer Prize winner. "Deals with the issues of racism that were observed by the author as a child in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. Despite being Lee's only published book, it led to Lee being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom of the United States for her contribution to literature in 2007. Lee has also been the recipient of numerous honorary degrees..." per Wikipedia. Simply the most outstanding & compelling read ever!

PitcherBooks: YA, All Ages. 1974 Multiple Award Winner. NF, Classic, Autobiography, Courage, Life and Death, Suspense. In her teens & twenties, Hilgunt Zassenhaus as a young German woman risked her life times beyond count to save the lives of Jews and POW's for over ten years before and during WWII. She was later awarded the highest civilian honors of Denmark, Norway, & West Germany. In 1974, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. If you ever wondered what it was like to be an everyday citizen in Germany during WWII (though Hiltgunt was anything but everyday considering her courage), she writes compellingly of how frightening life was under Hitler's regime of terror.

jain : Adult memoir.
PitcherBooks: YA, All Ages. 1861 NF Classic. One of those life-changing books! An autobiography and an American slavery exposé written by an escaped slave from the period. Not your typical overwrought melodramatic Victorian writing. Forget Uncle Tom's Cabin (which, btw, I like and respect). Not preachy. Not the self-pitying, poor me, whiny stuff from today. Not salacious but one gets the picture of a pretty young woman's lot. An honest, authentic, inspiring and amazing voice from the past. An excellent writer and an altogether admirable woman! You feel her joys, her pain, her loves, her hates. Her personality. Her life. You are there! And there but for the grace of God, you could have been her. Man, I wish I could have met this lady. An unsung hero! This book should be on every list of classics! Eminently readable and a compelling read. This is the kind of book that opens your eyes even when you didn't know they needed opening. I recommend this book to people of all races, creeds, colors, national origins, ancestry. To anyone who has ever felt sorry for themselves. To anyone who has ever struggled. To anyone who has ever followed their hopes. Her voice reaches out from the past and grabs your attention. You will never again take for granted the amazing opportunities that freedom gives us! More info at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harriet_Jacobs ... Free e-book at Gutenberg.org ... BTW, slavery still exists today.

PitcherBooks: YA, All Ages. 2006 Multiple Award Winner. Fiction, Semi-Autobiographical. A gritty but emotionally honest account of girl's life in the rough streets of a Montreal ghetto. A young girl is raised by a loving but mentally-ill and heroin-addicted teen father. Baby sees and experiences this life with the odd innocence of those who know no different. She is street-wise but needy, makes bad choices including prostitution, yet never falls into self-pity. The key appeal of this book is that Baby makes her choices, good and bad, and SHE deals with the repercussions in the best way she knows. (Thank God, most of us were/are never faced with either her limited choices or her solutions!) The author manages to make this tough young girl's strengths and failings totally understandable so that one can't help but be sympathetic and root for her throughout. She is smart. She strives. And she never gives up. Powerful and inspiring . Attitude is all. And it is this that saves her in the end. If you ever thought your life was just too hard, Baby will remind that there are people who have had it a lot worse who manage not just to strive but, in the end, thrive! Highly recommended.

PitcherBooks : Excellent writer but ... Irresponsible trivializing of brutality, violence, stalkers, rape, and sex. A bubble-gum after-school special gone wrong. I have no problem with sex and sexuality presented in a responsible and realistic way for this easily pleased and impressionable age set. But I do have a serious problem with a book obviously written for tweens that implies that oral sex is not really sex. And that stalking by a handsome and much older stranger may end up well. Or that if a girl doesn't pass inspection, well, she'll end up being just a pass-around sex toy. Really!?
