Waldstein: 1925. 3rd novel. DB: "According to Huxley, the theme of Those Barren Leaves is 'the undercutting of everything by a sort of despairing scepticism and then the undercutting of that by mysticism'."

Waldstein: 1944. 8th novel. DB: "a novel set in Florence in 1929 in which, to borrow Huxley's words, 'a piece of Comedie Humaine... modulates into a vision of the Divina Commedia'."

Waldstein: 1945. Edited by AH. DB: "a profoundly influential anthology of excerpts and commentaries illustrating what Huxley called 'the highest common factor of all the higher religions'. He went on to say with typical humour and humility, 'The greatest merit of the book is that about forty percept of it is not by me, but by a lot of saints, many of whom were also men of genius.'"

Waldstein: 1958. 8th collection of essays (on different aspects of his most famous novel). Still stimulating and controversial. 12 pieces, titled "chapter" but really essays.

Waldstein: 1958. Arranged and with a new Preface by AH. 47 pieces, 43 previously collected in no fewer than 13 different volumes and 4 uncollected which are reprinted in Vol. 6 of Complete Essays (#49).

Waldstein: 1959. 4th non-fiction. First published separately in 1954 and 1956. The famous or notorious, unduly so in either case, account of Huxley's experiments with mescalin.

Waldstein: 1960. Essays. All previously collected. Edited and introduced by Morris Philipson. Good short introduction to the finest part of AH's output.

Waldstein: 1962. 11th novel. Utopian counterpart of Brave New World. Not a very good novel, but a brilliant piece of imaginative world building.

Waldstein: 1963. 4th pamphlet.Reprinted in Vol. 6 of Complete Essays (#49).

Waldstein: 1984. The first 18 pieces from Collected Short Stories; the last three - "Chawdron", "The Rest Cure", "The Claxtons" from Brief Candles (1930) - are omitted.

Waldstein: Triad/Paladin, 1984-85. 3 vols. in slipcase. Contains cheap but hansome paperback versions of #11, #14 and #26.

Waldstein: 2000-2002, 6 vols. The most comprehensive edition of AH's essays, including the contents of all collections and all travel books mentioned above (#8, 11, 14, 16, 18, 23, 26, 28, 31, 37, 40), a few pamphlets (#21, 35, 44, 47), one full-length book (#29) and a number of previously uncollected pieces. Indispensable, never mind the scant and superficial editorial work. The volumes are handsomely produced hardcovers.

Waldstein: 2016. Three longish short stories - "Uncle Spencer", "Two or Three Graces" and "After the Fireworks" - omitted from Collected Short Stories (probably due to their length).
