While far-fetched at times, overall the novel was entertaining, suspenseful, and touching. Ben learns how to deal with his loss and how to connect with people again after his father's death and his subsequent retreat into video games. Many young adults would connect with Ben and his struggle to be independent at a time that he still needs his family and friends.
13 year old Ben Leeson goes on a trip to India with his grandmother to help her find her old pen-pal, Shanti. His grandmother hopes the trip will give Ben something to focus on other than video games and computers, and she hopes Ben will be able to come to terms with the death of his father. Follow the Elephant made me feel like I was on a trip to India; rich with sensory details and filled with daily adventures, there were times when I'd lift my head from the page and be surprised that I wasn't in Varanasi.
