Why on earth did I wait so long to read this book? It was wonderful. Even though it is part of a series, it is a stand alone novel. The setting is a small community in Sovereign, Maine and it focuses on one of the older, loved citizens. It is told in alternating chapters from present day and the 1940’s when Jana, the songbird, was in a TB hospital as a teenager. The story of the hospital was so interesting, and the characters in the book were so real. Reading this book felt like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a cold winter’s day with a fire blazing -- just comforting. By the time I finished the book I had tears rolling down my face because I just loved the characters so much. There are other books in the series that I would like to go back and read; this is the third. Fans of Jan Karon’s Mitford series would like this book.

I received this book from Library Thing in exchange for a review.

I wanted to like it. I adore gentle country stories. This one, though, didn't do it for me. Too cutesy philosophical. Not enough "story". I'm sorry to say so, but it was a bit of a slog to get through.

Didn't think I was going to like this book but once I started it I couldn't put it down. Really good book!

Early Review,
This book took awhile to get going, but once it did it was a real treat. While everything is understated, the plot, the characters, and the local color are charming and interesting. Mostly somber there are flashes of humor (the bathroom confessional scene is very humorous).
The book was fascinating enough for me to look into the other books in the series.
