Wiseman mostra la routine della missione dell'esercito americano impegnato a vigilare sui confini e i rapporti tra Egitto e Israele, dopo la guerra del Kippur. La m.d.p. di Wiseman analizza le dinamiche relazionali e lavorative all'interno di questa ennesima enclave americana in territorio straniero. L'isolamento e la lontananza dalle famiglie d'origine porta a uno spaesamento totale che solo la forza di volontà dei soldati e il peso politico fondamentale della missione, riescono a celare. En empruntant au roman Vie et Destin de Vassili Grossman, cette ultime lettre d’une mère à son fils, écrite peu avant qu’elle ne soit assassinée avec tous les Juifs d’une ville d’Ukraine, en 1941, Frederick Wiseman ajoute à son immense filmographie documentaire une pierre plus fictionnelle et presque théâtrale (la lettre est interprétée par la comédienne Catherine Samie), placée sous le triple signe du témoignage historique, du testament épistolaire et de la déclaration d’amour. This is long and I don't think I could have managed the whole thing in one go. It's interesting but I was expecting a commentary and it doesn't have one. It very much allows the people who appear to tell the story simply by filming them as they go about the usual life of the NYPL. It shows the wide variety of things that libraries do as part of their communities. There is too much of the various guest speakers - too many of them and clips are too long. I'd have liked more of the actual staff in the background, in their offices, picking books, processing books, readers advisory etc. They showed the NYPL management committee and some of the financial demands but no library operates without its staff doing the boring but necessary stuff in the background - it would have been nice to see them appearing more.… (más)
