This was a secret-filled book that kept me guessing on a number of the mysteries. With everyone in this novel keeping quiet about something, there was a lot happening throughout the novel.
One thing that disappointed me about this book was that many of the characters did not have their own personality until the last third of the book. The lack of personality made it hard to keep track of who was who.
On a better note, I liked how the book was set in England during a time when England and France had uneasy relations. It is never specified what year but instead provided many accurate historical details.
All and all, this book had me trying to solve the mysteries before the characters. With some successful and some not, it still kept me making predictions.

Can we all agree that the colors of the cover of Midnight on the River Grey are beautiful?
As much as I wanted to like this book, I could not get into it. The characters seemed a little flat. Rebecca was serious about her investigation but how she went about it was a bit different than how I would have done it. I think that is why I couldn't connect with her. Rebecca does a lot of illogical things and she just didn't make sense.
Lewis was a bit confusing. Everyone describes him as 'mysterious' and thinks that he was involved in the death of Jacob. It was hard for me to see where the villages were coming from because he seemed very polite throughout the whole novel.
The romance was probably the main thing that made me a bit uncomfortable. You see, Rebecca and Lewis were distant relatives who called each other 'cousin' at the beginning of the novel. Their families are still close enough that Lewis was the heir when Jacob died. That probably would have been fairly normal considering the time period, but it was hard for me to wrap my mind around.
As far as the plot - it was interesting but something was missing.
Please take note that these thoughts are all my opinions and you may end up loving this book.

Another great story by Abigail Wilson! I’ve read all the others and hope she writes more.

This suspenseful mystery, treasure hunt, light romance is set in Regency England. Phoebe Radcliffe (daughter of Lord Torrington from a previous book) is an artist working for Miss Drake to refurbish the paint in the ballroom of Avonthorpe Manor. Her childhood friend Daniel is helping. Miss Drake’s nephew Lt. Graham Burke arrived for an unexpected visit along with his friend Mr. Montague which brings new tension to the house. Miss Drake is attacked and in her final moments, whisper/shares the hiding place of the clues to find the long lost family treasure. She asks Phoebe to tell no one. Miss Chant is Phoebe’s companion and together they start looking for the treasure. Soon there is an interest between Lt. Burke and Phoebe and they join forces to look for the treasure.
There are others looking for the treasure too. The butler, Arnold, the strange couple living there, the Fagens and Mr. Haskell, a local resident with ties to the family history.

Then Phoebe encounters the man she had feelings for two years ago, Jean Cloutier, who is a French spy and used her innocence to escape from her father. She finally sees him for what he is and comes to grips with how he used her.

I like the building relationship with Lt. Burke and how they learn to trust each other despite all the turmoil around them. A delightful story with twists and turns and hope for dreamers.
