In this book, Whitaker tells the tale of Kali whose father is a great rat snake catcher. This book takes place in India and includes words from India such as rupees. There is a small glossary in the beginning of the book that explains these words. Besides the language, India is also represented through the food the children at school eat. For example, for snack the children have different foods such as idli, mixture, and fried termites. In addition, children live in many different tribes instead of towns. Natarajan’s illustrations use bright, bold colors such as blues, greens, oranges, purples, pinks that compliment the dark browns she uses as well.

Librarians can read this story to upper elementary students in order to introduce India. Students can discuss the similarities and differences between the United States and India. The Librarian can bring in someone who has lived in India to discuss their experience living in India.
