Decent, fun romance novel, but I had some issues with it that kept me from enjoying it.

Reed and his buddies had began attending the agricultural college. Reed was fun-loving, Bert was also adventurous but a devoted "farm boy", Joseph -a little older Native American, and Alonzo a "city boy" against the war raging throughout Europe.
The other students were Clara, Alonzo's free-spirited, determined, obstinate sister, and her more refined friend and Swiss immigrant, Trudi.
The war had a different impact on the various population in America. Wilson was elected on the prefaces' that he would keep America out of the war. However, after repeated attacks on innocent cruise lines by "the enemy" Wilson declared war on Germany as well.
Trudi was involved in aiding Europe by humanitarian efforts by knitting slippers, socks, & Neck scarves. Clara was not the least bit domesticated. Since she could not enlist to fight on the front lines, she decided to enlist as a medical aid through the YMCA. Reed, Bet and others went into officer training. Alonzo felt it a bigger need to remain home and run the factory. Besides, Alonzo felt the war was none of the United States business.
Eventually they went their separate ways. Reed was committed to Clara, although she rejected him for a long time, Clara was concerned for Reed but was determined to do more in the war effort. Her new YMCA friends felt she was doing enough. Bert and Reed were able to stay together for awhile. None of them realized how this time of life would affect them for years to come and change their view in life.
Suffrage was at the very beginning of coming to fruition and Clara was a strong advocate. Reed was for it, too..anything to win Clara's affection. He loved her spunk and spirit. It was at a very unsettled time and it is interesting the paths their individual lives went.
There are parts which are fun, infuriating, heart wrenching, romantic and inspiring, as well.
The many various characters were portrayed so well, each felt real. The scenes were -sometimes painfully - described well. It was easy to imaging being there.
The Book Cover and Title are depicted very well.

After an awkward beginning, the tales increases in adventure, mystery, and intrigue. This tale takes place during one of the many very difficult times of history. As in most instances, the wealthy prosper - if they do not defy those who have power over them - and the poor suffer inhumanely. It is a time of inhumane torture of those who government feel threatened by, stripping them of all their worldly goods. This story centers on one young woman stripped of her wealth and position after the tragic loss of her father. Thanks to the land she inherited from her mother and for her Godparents - who she had not seen in over a decade- she traveled to a community in Wales that was a better place than she had lived in. She had been betrothed, as a child, to their son. However, time initiates much change in one's life. They had ceased corresponding. Their paths had pursued different paths. When they met again, shocking changes had occurred and other opportunities arose, pulling the two betrothed further apart. As time passed, Joan's began to question her high ideals and what she though she wanted. She came to accept the fact in order to stay alive she must certainly leave her beloved Wales behind.
The characters were portrayed well, the scenes were simply detailed, yet, easily envisioned. With the appealing Book Cover and fitting Title, they were effectively eye-catching. There were touches of romance at various stages of the story. As stated earlier, the main problem I had was the sketchy, seemingly awkward beginning to the book. The reader 's interest was not effectively captured, leaving a slight sense of confusion for the next couple of chapters. The "flow" of the story was interrupted slightly in a few parts of the story. It was, all-in-all, a very good story and well worth reading.
I feel confident in offering a Strong Four Stars rating.

Quite a touching and lovely little story. Nothing startlingly original, but really well-handled. Lucy is a young ghost who has no memory of her life except a recall of overwhelming evil. She teams up with a a handsome gamekeeper who is able to see her and who likewise has no memories of his past, but has the feeling he and Lucy were involved in some way during her life. They must rediscover what happened to them and defeat the evil spirit of the hall's former owner so Lucy can be freed, but along the way, find themselves falling in love. I really enjoyed this book, one of the best ghost stories I've read in a long time. Formulaic of course, but well worth a read nevertheless.… (más)
