Integrating the natural world into human development is a simple concept with a huge scope. Malcolm Wells is a proponent who walked the talk with his focus on earth-sheltered architecture. This book is a simple, clear exploration of how large, monotone aspects of human development (parking lots, highways, large industrial/commercial structures) create 'dead' spots in the landscape that could be planned with more care and attention. Of course, earth-sheltered buildings play a major role.

Lots of color photographs, sketches, and details about his travels to look at this oversized human objects. The lettering is Malcolm's handwriting, which brings home that this is a personal book about a personal subject. The large lettering avoids any concern about legibility.

An essential part of the Malcolm Wells bibliography, but don't start here.

This is a nice hand written, hand illustrated introduction to the concepts and issues involved with building an underground house. It is by no means comprehensive but really a great guide to the things you need to start thinking about as you make plans.
