1871 George Frisbie Hoar and the Half-Breed Republicans, by Richard E. Welch, Jr. (read 20 Oct 1984) I found this a quite interesting book. It tells the story of the public life of Hoar, who was born in 1826 and was the son of the daughter of Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Hoar served four terms in the House and was elected to the Senate in January 1877 and served there (from Massachusetts) till his death on Sept 30, 1904. He was a Half-Breed--as opposed to a Stalwart--which means he supported Hayes, Garfield, and not Grant's third-term bid. He voted against acquisition of the Philippines--the Treaty of Paris ending the Spanish-American War passed by 57 to 27, one vote in excess of the necessary two-thirds. Hoar was the leading Republican against. He also led the Force Bill fight in 1890. He was not a bad Senator. "A large and benevolent statue of Hoar by Daniel Chester French is prominently stationed in front of the Worcester City Hall." I wonder if my erstwhile classmate practicing law in Worcester looks at it at times? [Long after reading this book, I saw the statue on the Internet: IMG_0134 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! ]… (más)
