Dan Shedrick takes a job as a junior architect at an American firm in San Iñigo and it doesn't take him long before he starts an affair with the wife of a resort owner. But then everything goes south when a radio personality is murdered...

This is a very short book, I read it quickly, but it has taken me ages to write this review. Usually, I try to write the review as soon as possible while everything is fresh in my head. But I had quite a lot of time before this review would be up and frankly I have put it off a bit. I still try to grasp what the point of the book was. I thought the murder was the important part when I started reading the book, but now I'm not sure. Is this a spy novel? Is this some kind of first-love-gone-bad-book? I have actually no idea; it didn't feel like a thriller. It felt that the book was built up by a lot of descriptions and way too long dialogs.
I still don't understand why the radioman was killed. There was never really an explanation for it. I just wished the book had focused on the murder, got an explanation for it. Skipped the spying and the kidnapping part or at least made it more in tuned with the rest of the story. It would probably also has been a good idea to make Dan a more interesting a likable character, what did he do all the day? Work? No idea, he seemed just to drink rum and sleep with his lover all the time...

This book left me with a feeling of dissatisfaction. If it would have been longer and the story more explored would it have been a much more enjoyable reading experience.

I received a copy from the publisher and TLC Book Tours in return for an honest review!

I really enjoy Mr. Weber's Brooklyn Crime Novels, I've read them both and they just keep getting better.
Lt. Flo Ott who is in charge of the elite Brooklyn Homicide unit is being briefed by the Mayor that she's personally in charge of keeping U.S. Senator-elect Cecil King safe until he is sworn into office at the beginning of the new year. Senator King has been receiving some pretty serious death threats by a group that has proven to be very deadly, they have taken down everyone they have gone after before.
While she is in the briefing at the Mayor's office regarding the much-dreaded security detail. A body has just been discovered in a very exclusive neighborhood that just happens to be that of an infamous rap star. She's got her hands full trying to handle both cases that could really turn ugly for the city if not handled with kid gloves.
Mr. Weber does a great job by having two different plot lines running parallel of each other. These are very fast paced novels and that's what makes a good police procedural in my opinion. I can't wait to see what he has for us next.
I would like to thank Alibi and NetGalley for providing me a copy of this novel for my honest Review.

Retired FBI agent stands on a cold snow covered platform waiting for the F train home after a night of drinking. But when the train pulls into the station, one car seems strange and that’s because the six people on board are all dead. Soon NYC detective Flo Ott has to figure if it is a terrorist attack or one or more of the victims the target.

I wanted to read this book because I have spent time in Brooklyn and have ridden the F Train and do love a good murder mystery. I thought the concept and build up was good but the continuing plot started to suffer and I soon become disenchanted. Some of the dialogue seemed stilted and although I liked the characters, I didn’t love them. Short book with an ending that was unsatisfying.… (más)

This the second Flo Ott book and I really don’t get it. Is Mr. Weber trying to tell us that there is no detecting in crime solving? No thinking, only blind luck?

The first book identified a photo and the crime was instantly solved. Here, Ott looks out a window, blinks, then calls the paddy wagon. An assassination plot is foiled by a non-traditional name, an impossible coincidence, and a racist accident. There is no detecting and this book does not even have the graceful language of the first book.

No more of this series for me.

I received a review copy of "Fanatics: A Brooklyn Crimes Novel" by Richard Hilary Weber (Random House – Alibi) through NetGalley.com.
